Lancaster Inferno heats up!

Sunday, June 01, 2008

Allentown PA  The Lancaster Inferno secured its second win of the their young season in the Women's Premier Soccer League (www.wpsl.info)  notching a 2-0 victory over the host Northampton Laurels Saturday ruining their opening night festivities.

Teresa Rynier (Conestoga Valley HS/JMU) scored the game-winning goal in the 37th minute with a left footed rocket into the right upper corner from 25 yards out.

"We had been threatening much of the first half and even had a goal called back on a questionable off sides call but the girls kept generating quality chances" said head coach Doug Harris. Rynier received the ball with her back to goal and took a couple of deft touches to create some space for the shot. Harris concluded "I have seen Teresa over the years score many goals from range but that had to be one of her best for sure."

Katie Lamm (Elco HS/Eastern Mennonite) added a second-half 49th minute insurance goal after receiving a through ball from Amy Pickard (Lancaster Catholic/Univ of Delaware) outside the penalty box, where Lamm took one touch to cut off a recovering defender and finished off the score with a low, driven ball passed goalkeeper Caitlin Corrigan into the left corner. "I have been thoroughly impressed with Katie Lamm's work rate both in practice and on the pitch. She worked hard to get behind the defense and Pickard timed the delivery perfect to release Katie. Once Katie got the ball, she sealed the defender perfectly and just waited until the keeper committed. It was a high level play all the way around" added Harris.

Lancaster out-shot Northampton 9-1 in the opening half and had a 3-1 advantage in corners. Inferno goalie Joy Shaiebly (Lancaster Mennonite/Eastern Mennonite Univ) recorded her second consecutive shutout recording 2 saves.

The 2-0 Inferno will try to make it 3 straight when they play host to the Laurels this Wednesday, June 4 at Hempfield High School's Quad at 7:30 p.m.

"The Laurels were in a tough situation by having games in two consecutive nights and will likely come out with vengeance Wednesday," said Coach Harris. "I fully expect the girls will be up to to the task on Wednesday."
