 Beverly, MA - May 20th, 2010 - In front of a packed house of more than 800 fans at Endicott College, the Boston Breakers of Women's Professional Soccer knocked off their Boston Aztec Women's Premier Soccer League reserve team, 3-1, in a spirited and competitive match.
In fact, with the Breakers somewhat depleted thanks to many players away with their respective national teams, the Aztecs seemed to take control for the first 20 minutes of the game. The best chance came when Mandi Back (North Olmstead, OH/Dayton University) slotted a thru-ball for Leah Blayney (Katoomba, New South Wales, Australia/Central Connecticut St.) to run onto, but her shot sailed just high over the bar.
The Breakers opened the scoring in the 24th minute after the Aztecs gave up an indirect kick just inside the box after an errant back pass forced Aztec keeper Rebecca Ritchie (Hilton, NY/Weber St.) to play the ball with her hands. A quick Breakers restart allowed Liz Bogus (Sandy, Utah/Arizona St.) an easy tap in for a 1-0 Breakers lead.
The goal energized the Breakers and deflated the Aztecs somewhat, and the Breakers soon struck again when Taryn Hemmings (Greeley, Colo./Univ. of Denver) got behind the defense in the 37th minute for a breakaway, slotting the ball behind Ritchie to make the score 2-0 at the half.
In the second half, the Breakers effectively sealed the game when Tiffany Weimer (North Haven, CT/Penn St.) struck in the 60th minute. Blayney got the Aztecs on the board three minutes later after Back put her through on goal once again to account for the final score.
The next Boston Aztec home match is on Saturday, May 29th at 4:00 PM when the Boston Aztec Breakers Reserve take on the Maine Tide at Endicott College. The Breakers next home match is Saturday, June 5th at St. Louis Athletica at 6:00 PM at Harvard Stadium.
