Thomasville -The Thomasville Dragons are excited to announce that spring soccer at the YMCA is back by popular demand.
The YMCA has offered fall and spring soccer to the youth of Thomasville since before the turn of the century, and has provided the primary opportunity for introduction to recreational soccer in Thomasville. The YMCA has anywhere from 400 to 800 registrations for the fall and spring sessions each year.
This spring, the YMCA was unable to offer soccer, with one of the problems being the lack of coaches. While most families in Thomasville enjoy their children playing soccer, not all moms and dads have the time or experience to coach.
The Dragons, Thomasville's Premier Women's Soccer club with several nationally licensed coaches, heard of the dilemma from many corners of the community and offered to help. The Dragons proposed to schedule qualified coaches and referees in a revamped format, emphasizing player development and good sportsmanship. The program is tailored for ages 4 to 12, and will teach fundamentals of soccer in fun environment. and the YMCA has approved the proposal. The fees remain the same as before,
"FC Thomasville is very excited at the return of YMCA Spring Soccer, and feel that it is important to the continued long term development of quality soccer players in Thomasville. There are several high school players in Thomasville who will be receiving soccer scholarships around the country, and many of them began their soccer training at the YMCA" said John Bridges, the Director of Program Development at the Futbol Club of Thomasville.
Registration for the new Dragons YMCA Spring Soccer will begin March 1st with the first team events scheduled for April 7 and the season running through May 17 Registration and information forms are available at the Butler-Mason YMCA.
The Thomasville Dragons are Georgia's only representative in the Women's Premier Soccer League, and compete in the South Region with the Tampa Bay Elite, Orlando Falcons, Central Florida Strikers, Miami Kickers FC, Palm Beach United and the Puerto Rico Capitals. The 2008 season will begin in May and culminate with the League Championship the last weekend of July.
