Pride vice-captain Danielle Malagari scored her second goal in as many games for the TSC Maryland Pride on Saturday night, but the Pride ultimately fell to the Philadelphia Independence 4-2.
The tandem of Heidi Sabatura and Jenn Hoy combined for three goals and two assists in the season-opener for Philadelphia.
The Pride took no time getting on the board. In the 5th minute the team was awarded a free kick from 28 yards out. That opened the window for midfielder Danielle Malagari, who bent the shot off the near post and in for her second goal of the season.
Pride goalkeeper Jocelyn Papciak didn't take much time to get into the act either. In the 10nth minute Sabatura found Hoy on a pretty through ball. Hoy stepped in on Papciak, who stood her ground and stifled her near post attempt.
However, five minutes later the independence equalized when Hoy split the center of the Pride defense and slipped one under Papciak to the far post.
Hoy continued to give the Pride fits and slipped a ball into forward Heidi Sabatura in the 23rd minute. Sabatura took a touch to conrol the ball, and took another to beak Papciak low to the corner to give Philadelphia the 2-1 lead.
Hoy came back for more in the 38th minute when she found herself in alone, but this time Papciak stepped off her line, got her left hand down to put her point-blank shot wide.
Hoy and Sabatura continued their assault on the Pride net early in the second half. Hoy found Sabatura on a low cross just two minutes into the half, which Sabatura tapped into the wide open goal.
Anabel Jiminez scored the Pride's second goal off of a cross from striker Diana Barerra in the 73rd minute, but it proved to be to little, too late for the Pride, who will be going for their first win of the season on Saturday at Buxmont.
