TSC Maryland Pride fell to the University of Maryland Terrapins 1-0 off an own goal during Friday night's preseason friendly.
The only goal of the night came with two minutes to play in the first half when an awkwardly bent corner kick bounced inside the six yard box. Pride defender Brandi DeWitt Attempted to head the ball out of harm's way, but misplayed it up into the net for the own goal.
The corner came as a result of a spectacular save from Pride Goalkeeper Lianne Maldonado, who deflected midfielder Olivia Wagner's rocket attempt from 22 yards out just over the crossbar.
The game was otherwise even, with both teams logging four shots on goal.
Friday's Pride squad was comprised of several returning players including captain Sarah Gumina, vice-captain Danielle Malagari, 2009 leading scorer Anabel Jimenez, Becca Bazemore, Mandy Komar, Christy Bush, Haley Howe and Karyn Farrar.
Several newcomers also saw action, many of whom are hoping to earn a spot on the 2010 roster.
The Pride threatened early when Christen Karniski whipped a cross into the UMD box in the 4th minute. Terps goalkeeper Shannon Zickler just got a fist on the ball over the head of striker Dana Wiedel. After a short scramble, Zickler collected the ball.
Sophomore Lydia Hastings earned the Terps' first real look of the game when Molly Dreska found her on the through ball straight up the middle in the 25th minute. Maldonado came out to challenge it, and Hastings knocked it well wide.
The pride got a chance to equalize in the 65th minute of the second half when Steph Eyler cut the ball back just inside the 18 yard box and found Carissa Chantilles on a crossing feed. Under pressure from Terps defenders, Chantilles hit the ball just over the crossbar.
The Pride will be taking on the Bethesda Force U-18s in their next preseason scrimmage on Thursday, April 16.
