FSA Freedom's Newsome & Ajax America's Gallegos net Co-Player Of The Week honors; three from FSA honored
SACRAMENTO, CA (06/14/10) - Clutch, game-winning performances by some of the top players in the
Women's Premier Soccer League (WPSL) highlight this edition of the WPSL "Team Of The Week." As we near the halfway point to the 2010 season, the race to qualify for the 2010 WPSL Final Four (July 31-August 1) in Dallas, TX has begun to pick up pace: with teams either needing results to keep them in the post-season hunt or for those fortunate few, the chance to run away with their respective division or conference title.
In the toughest decision for Player Of The Week honors of this season, two players helped their teams remain undefeated while cementing spots at the top of their division and/or conference. Therefore, with a conciliatory nod to Claremont's
Denise Thomas & New York A.C.'s
Jevne Reid, the Co-Player Of The Week performances from
Kimberly Newsome (FSA Freedom) and
Leah Gallegos (Ajax America) were just a touch of the ball better as they helped their sides to 4-0 starts to the 2010 season.
F Jevne Reid (NEW YORK A.C.)In her first weekend with NYAC, the former Radford star had an impact in crucial wins over Jersey Select & the Millburn Magic: using her speed for the assist on the GWG vs. the Select and against the 2009 East Finalists, scored the GWG in the 1-0 win that keeps the team in the Central Division race.
F Kimberly Newsome (FSA FREEDOM) - WPSL Co-Player Of The WeekThe University of Central Florida forward scored both GWG's for the 4-0 Sunshine Conference leaders this past weekend - in the 80th minute of the 1-0 win over Brandon F.C. and just three minutes into the victory over Palm Beach United.
F Denise Thomas (CLAREMONT STARS)The recent UC-Riverside grad scored both GWG's for the Stars this past weekend to make the race in the Pacific-South a close one: the first in the 89th minute of their important 3-2 win over SD United, and the next day, the tight 2-1 victory at PSSCV-The Rooks.
MF/F Leah Gallegos (AJAX AMERICA) - WPSL Co-Player Of The WeekThe former USC star was omnipresent for the undefeated 4-0 Pacific-South leaders, scoring both GWG's in wins over PSSCV-The Rooks and a crucial 1-0 road victory over SD United.
MF Vanessa Laxgang (CHICAGO ECLIPSE SELECT)One of the top-ranked youth players in the country & soon-to-be Clemson Tiger had a hand in each goal in Chicago's 3-2 win over F.C. Milwaukee, scoring the game-tying & winning goals while assisting on the final tally.
MF Sarah Hagen (F.C. MILWAUKEE NATIONALS)The U.S. U-23 Women's National Team standout notched the GWG in the 2-0 win over Iowa and was the playmaker for the Nationals in the close 3-2 loss to the Chicago Eclipse Select.
MF Therese Smith (NEW ENGLAND MUTINY)The multiple TOTW nominee & leading scorer for the University of Massachusetts scored the vital GWG in the 2-0 victory over Seacoast United, keeping the Mutiny in the Northeast Division race.
MF/D Kathryn Healey (FSA FREEDOM)The UCF standout used her all-around game to lead FSA to two wins, as she played hard on defense, supported the attack and assisted on a goal in Friday's win over Palm Beach.
D Heather Havron (NEW YORK A.C.)The University of Auburn defender was instrumental in holding all the attack Jersey Select could muster on Saturday, and the next day, held the talented Millburn Magic offense scoreless for the first time of the season.
D Emily Simon (DALLAS PREMIER)Asked to play forward for the first time to help a slumping Dallas offense and responded with a hat-trick in a important win over the Tulsa Spirit for the Final Four hosts, but unfortunately, broke her ankle on the final tally.
GK Kelly Sisley (FSA FREEDOM)The Brevard College All-American registered back-to-back shutout wins for the FSA Freedom this past weekend, helping the team take the lead in the Sunshine Conference.
HONORABLE MENTION: F Stephanie Eyler (TSC MARYLAND PRIDE) - in a tough week for forwards making the "starting 11," her two goals and great overall play were key in the win over South Jersey United;
F Brooke Knowlton (BOSTON AZTEC U-23) - the Boston College star had her hand in both goals for the Aztec U-23s and was the most consistent attacking player in the 2-0 win over Maine;
MF Sissi (CALIFORNIA STORM) - one of the all-time greats in women's soccer makes the WPSL TOTW for the second time this season, as the Storm go 5-1 in the Pacific-North with a vital win over Clovis;
MF Olivia Elias (MIAMI KICKERS F.C.) - the defensive midfielder controlled the pitch throughout the match, and consistently shut down the South Florida attack in the 0-0 draw;
MF Chelsea Davis (SAN FRANCISCO NIGHTHAWKS) - toughness personified as she had the lone goal in the 3-1 loss to Clovis game, after returning to the game after a vicious slide tackle that took out her out in the 19th minute of the game;
D Shauna Kruger (BSC PORTLAND RAIN) - played all 180 minutes this weekend at center back as the Rain split a home-and-home with Spokane, allowing only two goals;
GK Tatiana Saunders (NEW YORK A.C.) - had 10 great saves vs. the Millburn Magic, keeping their opponents scoreless for the first time this season.
