PRO WOMEN'S SOCCER RETURNS TO WEST COAST

The Orange County & Bay Area Sol will help fill the void left behind from loss of two WPS teams

SACRAMENTO, CA (11/29/10) - The Women's Premier Soccer League (WPSL) is excited to announce the addition of two California-based professional women's soccer teams - under one ownership group - for the Summer 2011 season. The Orange County & Bay Area Sol teams will play within the current WPSL structure, while the majority of the teams in the WPSL will maintain their amateur status in order to comply with collegiate regulations regarding student-athletes.

The 12-year old league has over 50 teams nationwide and has been a success story for women's soccer. With Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) currently not having any teams on the West Coast, this will afford the WPSL the opportunity to fill the void left behind. The WPSL welcomes these new teams in the East Bay Area and Orange County areas of California as the cornerstone of providing the opportunity for professional teams to play in the league.

"I see the possibility of an exciting new way for women's soccer players to play at an even higher level here on the West Coast," said WPSL Commissioner Jerry Zanelli. "Hopefully this will be able to serve as a template for an eventual new nationwide concept for teams to survive on a professional basis."

The ownership group is composed of people with top-level soccer and business sense, led by Paul Haley and Scott Alford. Both will be in charge of the acquisition of sponsorships, with Haley being the lead investor in the recent bid to land a Los Angeles-based WPS team for the 2011 season.

"I see the WPSL as a step in forming a professional league in the future," said Haley. "The league has over 50 amateur teams nationwide and is the largest women's soccer league in the world. In discussion with the league leadership, they see a very strong possibility of us involving ourselves in the future of women's professional soccer."

"Our ownership models will look to include multiple community members to ensure that there is a strong connectivity between the youth and club organizations," said Alford.

In addition to the investor group, the coaching will bring high-level expertise from Women's Professional Soccer. Abner Rogers - the 2009 WPS Coach of the Year who led the Los Angeles Sol to the regular season title - will be the Head Coach of the OC Sol. A former USASA National Team coach who was inducted into the Hall of Fame, Rogers will serve as Technical Director for both teams.

Terry Foley will be the General Manager & Head Coach of the Bay Area Sol and as Director of Player Personnel for the expansion Philadelphia Independence this past season, he assembled the team that made the 2010 WPS Final. Both Rogers & Foley will be at this January's National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Convention in Baltimore, MD and will enter negotiations with professional players soon.
