WPSL TEAM OF THE WEEK II

Boston's Blayney (L) & California's Morgan (R) share Player Of The Week honors

SACRAMENTO, CA (06/07/10) - It was a hectic weekend in the Women's Premier Soccer League (WPSL) with no team left behind. After the conclusion of this weekend's action, every team in every division in each conference of the league have now begun their Summer 2010 season. The second edition of the WPSL "Team Of The Week" reflects the intense competition the league put on display all over the country from four different conferences.

Speaking of intensity, such was the race for individual honors as stars for California & Boston share the weekly accolade. The debut performance from recent U.S. Women's National Team call-up Alex Morgan for the 4-1 California Storm and the continuing leadership of Leah Blayney for the 3-0 Boston Aztec Breakers Reserves merit WPSL Co-Player Of The Week honors:

F Alex Morgan (CALIFORNIA STORM) - WPSL Co-Player Of The Week
The enigmatic Cal star burst on to the Pacific-North Division scene, netting three goals (including a GWG) and an assist for the Storm in the team's road wins over San Francisco & North Bay F.C.

F Alyssa Mautz (ST. LOUIS SCOTT GALLAGHER ELITE)
The U.S. U-23 National Team member recorded a goal and two assists in SLSG Elite's wins over 2009 Midwest Conference champion OP Elite and Carmel United S.C.

F Laurie Nosbusch (F.C. MILWAUKEE NATIONALS)
The Wisconsin Badger scored the first-ever goal for the Nationals, the eventual game-winner at Iowa Rush while creating several other scoring chances.

MF Leah Blayney (BOSTON AZTEC BREAKERS RESERVE) - WPSL Co-Player Of The Week
The league-leader in points (17) & goals scored, the former Central Connecticut star netted two more goals (7 total) and was one of the most consistent players in the 4-0 victory over their sister club, Boston Aztec U-23.

MF Carmen Bognanno (AJAX AMERICA)
Playing the captain's roll in the central midfield, the former Duke University standout led Ajax to another thrilling stoppage-time victory, this time a 3-2 win over LAFC Chelsea.

MF Kim Malecki (MILLBURN MAGIC)
The game-winning goal against defending WPSL Champion Long Island last Friday night was the third consecutive game the Monmouth midfielder has scored for the Magic.

MF Kelsey Hunyadi (OP ELITE)
After a tight 1-0 loss to SLSG Elite, the University of kentucky midfielder netted 2 goals (including the GWGW) in a 7-0 win over F.C. Metro Magic.

D Mariette Boyce (SD UNITED)
The Washington State University defender started the offense for the team's first goal and kept the box clear for goalkeeper Sophia Perez in the 2-1 win over LAFC Chelsea.

D Kelsey Mitchell (FSA FREEDOM)
The Virginia Tech defender not only helped deny the South Florida offense in the team's 3-1 victory, but she also initiated the offense from the left flank.

GK Lia Fierro (MILLBURN MAGIC)
The 2009 NEC Goalkeeper Of The Year for Monmouth enjoyed two shutouts this past week, including handing National Champion Long Island their first shutout loss in two years.

GK Natalie Kulla (ST. LOUIS SCOTT GALLAGHER ELITE)
The U.S. U-23 National Team member notched two close shutout wins over OP Elite (1-0) and CUSC (2-0) this weekend for first-year SLSG Elite.

HONORABLE MENTION: F Stephanie Ochs (SD UNITED) - a goal and an assist for the University of San Diego star in the 2-1 win over LAFC Chelsea; F Sally Palmer (FSA FREEDOM) - scored the game-winning goal off a deft one-timer in the 58th minute, off a driven cross from Kate Healey; MF/D Maureen Whitney (CALIFORNIA STORM) - the multiple All-WPSL selection matched the midfield intensity set by North Bay F.C. in the 1-0 road win; MF Sarah Talbert (F.C. MILWAUKEE NATIONALS) - the center midfielder provided a good defending presence and distributed well in the 2-0 win over Iowa; GK Kaycee Gunion (SAN DIEGO SEALIONS) - a tough week as far as goalkeepers are concerned, the Cal State San Marcos keeper was just behind Fierro & Kulla, making many saves to help the SeaLions' get their first win against Claremont.
