WPSL TEAM OF THE WEEK V

Two Pacific Conference stars help their respective teams in divisional races

SACRAMENTO, CA (06/28/10) - It was another tough week pertaining the selection of the Women's Premier Soccer League (WPSL) Team Of The Week, never mind when it came to top player honors. Two stars from Pacific Conference sides went head-to-head with two forwards from a new Midwest Conference side, and it was only a razor-thin difference that propelled the former to Co-Player Of The Week honors.

That difference was the performances by North Bay F.C.'s Lauren Maris & San Diego's Laura Linehan, and how they pushed their teams into position for post-season qualification with only a few matches remaining. Fort Wayne F.C. has had a strong 3-1-1 start in the Midwest-South Division with half their matches remaining, so we give a conciliatory nod to their duo of Debs Brereton & Katie Wilson for their strong run of play.

F Lauren Maris (NORTH BAY F.C. WAVE) - WPSL Co-Player Of The Week
The University of San Francisco star has been impressive of late, scoring eight goals in the last five games, three game-winners in the last three away Pacific-North matches - which included wins over San Francisco (2g) and Clovis Nighthawks (2g) this past weekend.

F Debs Brereton (FORT WAYNE F.C.)
The former Middle Tennessee State & SD United forward scored two goals & two assists in Midwest-South wins over both St. Louis teams - the tying goal vs. F.C. Metro Magic (4-2 W) and the GWG vs. St. Louis Scott Gallagher Elite (3-2 W).

F Katie Wilson (FORT WAYNE F.C.)
The Murray State University forward skillfully scored two goals & two assists in wins over both St. Louis teams, which included an excellent individual performance and a diving header.

MF Laura Linehan (SAN DIEGO SEALIONS) - WPSL Co-Player Of The Week
The San Diego SeaLions are back in the Pacific-South race with wins over LAFC Chelsea & Claremont, with thanks to their team leader in goals scored. The Lenoir-Rhyne University star assisted on the first goal vs. Claremont and finished the game-winner to propel SDWFC to a 2-0 weekend.

MF Michelle Spacciapolli (SAN DIEGO SEALIONS)
The All-WCC selection for Pepperdine was right behind Linehan for Player Of The Week honors. Spacciapolli scored the first goal vs. Claremont (with thanks to Linehan) in the 2nd minute and nine minutes later, crossed in the assist on the game-winning goal.

MF Haleigh Stremanos (MIAMI KICKERS F.C.)
The 16 year-old rising star scored two goals and struck the post in a 5-0 victory over second-place Palm Beach United in Sunshine Conference action. Stremanos followed that with a strong performance against conference-leaders FSA Freedom, striking the post again in the 0-0 draw.

MF Ann Marie Tangorra (LAFC CHELSEA)
Tangorra continues her great form with her second consecutive WPSL TOTW selection. Tangorra earned LAFC a penalty kick vs. San Diego and followed that up by registering a goal and an assist in Sunday's critical 2-1 win over Pacific-South leaders Ajax America.

D/MF Kara Mundelein (FSA FREEDOM)
With six starters missing the important road match at Miami, the soon-to-be Florida Atlantic defensive midfielder stepped up for the conference leaders. The FSA Freedom got the vital road draw with thanks to her heading and ball-winning ability.

D Anna Caniglia (BOSTON AZTEC BREAKERS RESERVES)
The former Nebraska star was rock solid in her 1v1 defending, and scored her first goal of the year - while narrowly missed a second - in the 3-1 win over Seacoast United for the Northeast Division leaders.

D Alexis Hernandez (MIAMI KICKERS F.C.)
The outside back continued to play outstanding defense Friday and Sunday, helping to hold the top two teams in the Sunshine Conference scoreless and continue Miami's 431-minute long shutout streak. Hernandez was a force on both ends of the pitch, firing three shots on goal in each match.

GK Lindsay Dickerson (NORTH BAY F.C. WAVE)
The Stanford goalkeeper handed the high-scoring Clovis Sidekicks (32 goals in 7 matches) their first shutout of the season. Dickerson recorded her fourth shutout of 2010 vs. Clovis and helped the Wave to two wins - who now possess the lowest goals allowed per game in the Pacific-North Division.

HONORABLE MENTION: F Noelle Pineiro (BRANDON F.C.) - scored the GWG in the 1-0 win over South Florida and was dangerous all night before lightning shortened the match; F Martha Gudiel (SAN FRANCISCO NIGHTHAWKS) - the veteran forward again came through for the Nighthawks, distributing the ball from the holding forward/midfield position while scoring the game-winner vs. BSC Portland; F Kellie Zakrzewski (SPOKANE BLACK WIDOWS) - the rising Seattle Pacific University freshman recorded a first-half hat trick vs. F.C. Sacramento; D/MF Jeannette Dyer (BRANDON F.C.) - the defensive Midfielder won balls all night, plugged holes and sprayed numerous dangerous balls in behind South Florida's defense in the shutout win.
