WPSL AZTEC DEFEAT LONG ISLAND

WPSL Aztec Brando Nelson

NORTH READING, MA (June 16, 2012)  --The Aztec MA Women claimed their second win of the 2012 WPSL season Saturday with a dominant second half against visiting Long Island Fury.

The first half was a back and fourth battle; the Fury dominated the first minutes with their speed on the wings, but the Aztec Women were able to capitalize with quick transitions from the midfield into the feet of their dangerous front line.

In the 9th minute Maddy Evans did what her game is all about and beat her defender on the right wing, effortlessly whipping the ball across to speedy Devin Petta Griffin for the Aztec opening score. The first half continued with great play from both teams but the Fury equalized in the 24th minute. The Aztec women rebounded however, and used their speedy flank players and versatile midfielders to keep the Fury defending in their half. In the 38th minute a perfectly weighted ball was played over the Fury’s backline right into the feet of Evans. With great placement and finesse, Evans put the ball in the back of the net to give Aztec a 2-1 lead at half. Aztec had ten shots to seven advantage.

With immediate pressure to start the half, the Aztec women were able to break the game open.  Combining with quick one-two’s in the midfield and lots of possession, the Aztec took a 3-1 lead (52nd minute) on a perfect far post cross to Evans who blasted a header past the helpless Fury keeper.

As the game continued the Fury continued to play their outside wings and backs sometimes leading the Aztec into positional problems. However, quick-footed Hilary Savoy was able to take advantage as the game opened up and hit a bullet in the 55th minute for a 4-1 lead. The Fury would manage only two shots in the second half as Aztec overwhelmingly controlled the play and possession. With stable play out of Jenna Roncarati and Jessica Morrow in the back, the Aztec women were able to keep the score 4-1 for the remaining minutes. The Fury got some fire in the last 10 minutes creating several chances for scoring on crosses, however with smart play by the Aztecs they were able to win their first home game (overall record, 2-1).

Aztec will next travel to the New England Mutiny on Wednesday, June 20.  The Mutiny handed the Aztec the only loss of the year in the season opening game.
