June 16th, 2012 Williamsburg, VA: Sharks forward Lauren Gough scored the game tying goal in the 70th minute off an assist from Christina Corbin to gain a 1-1 draw at home against the FC Bucks. The Bucks came out strong in the opening half pushing the attack and pressing the Sharks defenders into a turnover, taking a 1-0 lead in the 3rd minute of the match. The visiting side gained momentum after the early goal and continued to possess the ball builing numbers into the attack and keeping the Shakrs on their heels. "We came out flat against a good team and paid for it early." says Sharks coach Kevin Darcy. "In this league you must be sharp from the start or your mistakes will be punished - which is what happened tonight in the opening few minutes. Most teams on the road will push the tempo early and try to get hold of the game when they still have their legs under them, and they certainly came at us with a good rhythm and pace. Fortunately we withstood their early pressure and eventually got hold of the match in the second half."
Bucks forward Colleen Williams got the Bucks on the board in the 3rd minute with a quick counter attack off of an errant pass from the Sharks taking a 1-0 lead. For the next 20 minutes the Bucks looked poised to get the second goal and take hold of the match but good defending by the Sharks backline and steady play from goalkeeper Jesseca Thompson kept the visitors at 1. Although the Bucks continued to get the better of the play throughout the 1st half, the Sharks began to penetrate into their half and create regular scoring chances, providing confidence leading into the 2nd half of play.
"We talked about turning up the pace of the game, playing with more confidence and just being better on the ball in order to turn the game around and definitely executed that from the start of the 2nd half. We high pressured them and began to create consistent chances playing the majority of the final half in their end of the field. Lauren was especially sharp tonight and you could see it was only a matter of time until she broke them down and scored the tying goal." Gough was coming off a two goal performance in the Sharks home opening victory last weekend against New York AC and continued to be a force tonight scoring the goal and pressing the attack throughout the entire match.
With the tie against FC Bucks the Sharks move to 1-2-2 on the season and prepare for a weekend road trip with matches in Syracuse Saturday and back in Pennsylvania against Buxmont Torch on Sunday.
