WPSL WEEK 5 WRAP-UP

Lancaster (top) makes a statement in the WPSL East while SLC Sparta (below) stays undefeated

ALAMO S.C. SAN ANTONIO 1, DALLAS PREMIER 4
DALLAS PREMIER 5, HOUSTON SOUTH SELECT 3

SAN ANTONIO, TX (06/07/09) - The Dallas Premier (3-0-0 WPSL Big Sky-South) travelled to Cibolo Stadium in San Antonio on Sunday, June 7th to take on Alamo S.C. (1-1-0 WPSL Big Sky-South) not knowing what to expect from the first-year club. From the start, the Premier spent nervous energy trying to get their touches and passes down on the fast artificial turf, but would find their tempo in a 4-1 road win.

"We really didn't know what to expect coming down here," said Dallas Head Coach Joe Soliz. "[Alamo S.C. Head Coach] Lance [Noble] had let me know earlier in the week that he had a side to be reckoned with. I was a little nervous. This was a good win for us. Maybe this makes us the team that could take the whole thing now."

Alamo S.C. hustled around, making life miserable for Dallas and fifteen minutes in, a miscommunication between goalkeeper Alexandra Higgins and her defense led to a goal credited to Alamo's Rose Cohen for the 1-0 lead. The Premier's skill and experience began to provide more opportunities and would eventually lead to the tying goal as an Alamo defender was called for a turf-bounce hand ball in the box, giving Dallas a penalty kick.

Christine Nieva stepped up and drilled the ball past the Alamo keeper and two more goals before half-time from Kendall Juett and Anita Pedford - off a corner kick that was a perfectly-placed curve ball that rocketed into the net - would give the visitors the edge. In the second half, Heather Hutyra added the fourth and final Premier goal on a blast from outside the 18-yard box.

Two days earlier in their home opener at Cedar Hill H.S., Dallas thought they had Houston South Select (1-3-0 WPSL Big Sky-South) down but they certainly were not out, as their late comeback bid came to naught in a 5-3 victory for the Premier. Rice's Erin Scott notched goals in the 50th & 71st minutes to put Dallas up by a 3-1 score but the never-say-die Houston side would tie the match.

Premier keeper Tina Rincon would get tricked on a long-range shot by a South Select player and in the 83rd minute, Houston's Joyce Hansen would use her speed to beat Rincon to the ball. Her empty net tally - and second goal of the night - would bring the score back to 3-3. Goals from Scott and Lauren Huffman would finish off the South Select side.

MAINE TIDE 1, MILLBURN MAGIC 1
BOSTON AZTECS 3, MILLBURN MAGIC 0

BANGOR, ME (06/07/09) - In their second game in a 24-hour span, the Millburn Magic (1-3-1 WPSL East) faced the Maine Tide (0-3-1 WPSL East) at windy Husson College and the visitors struggled to find their attacking rhythm once again as the match would end in a 1-1 draw. The day before in Amesbury, MA, the Boston Aztecs (4-0-0 WPSL East) would remain undefeated in conference play, winning by a similar 3-0 verdict over the Magic in the team's re-match from last weekend's game in New Jersey.

In the match against Maine, the deadlock would be broken in the 62nd minute by Harvard's Kat Sheeleigh, who would show good composure under pressure to finish past the onrushing Tide goalkeeper to give the Magic a 1-0 lead. Millburn continued to press in search of a second goal but failed to hold on to their lead and conceded in the 83rd minute.

A long ball played forward from the right was helped by the windy conditions, carried over Magic keeper Lia Fierro and struck the crossbar, with the rebound being slotted home by Maine's Shelby Bradford. The Magic had chances in the final minutes but were unable to find the end product.

On June 6th, the Aztecs fared well in the first half, taking 11 shots and earning three goals in a five-minute span. In the 27th minute, Carol Tognetti broke through the Magic defense to feed a ball to Aztec player/coach Rebekah Splaine, who took a low hard shot that Fierro could not reach.

Three minutes later, Sophia Mundy's shot on net was saved by Fierro but Splaine was there for the rebound and smashed the ball home for her second goal. Mundy's pace was the greatest threat to the Magic but Kim Malecki - working tirelessly to counter her presence - would limit the midfielder's overall impact on the match.

Yet, in the 32nd minute, a hard foul was committed on Splaine in the box and Tognetti took the penalty kick. Fierro saved the shot but Boston Breakers (Women's Professional Soccer) developmental player Maggie Tomecka jumped on the rebound and fired it in the back of the net for the 3-0 lead.

The Aztecs came out strong for the second half with great passing that began with Boston Breakers developmental keeper and Peabody native Ashley Phillips in net and Tomecka heading the defense. Phillips has been a solid force for the Aztecs, adding another shutout to her record while only allowing a goal in four games.

However, Boston did not score again and appeared to get rattled, resulting in two yellow cards. The Magic's Kat Sheeleigh and Katie Ryan almost gained consolation goals on a number of effective breaks. The Magic will look to improve their performance and get a win this Wednesday, June 10th, when they will host the undefeated Adirondack Lynx (3-0-0 WPSL East) at Millburn H.S. for a 7:00 p.m. kick-off.

The Aztecs will take on the Maine Tide at home on Saturday, June 13th. Please check http://NEaztec.com for game-time. Tickets are $5 and are available at the door. Children wearing an Aztec, Breakers or Revolution jersey get free admission.

MIAMI KICKERS F.C. 2, FLORIDA SURGE 0
MIAMI KICKERS F.C. 7, PUERTO RICO CAPITALS 1

PLANTATION, FL (06/07/09) - The Miami Kickers F.C. (2-0-0 WPSL Sunshine) opened up their Summer 2009 season with two important victories at home against the Puerto Rico Capitals (0-3-0 WPSL Sunshine) on Friday, June 5th and the Florida Surge (1-1-1 WPSL Sunshine) on Sunday, June 7th. Despite a rain delay on Friday, the Miami sailed past Puerto Rico to a 7-1 victory and with a repeat weather performance two days later, the Kickers battled physically against the Surge for a 2-0 win.

"The Miami Kickers played two solid games against the Puerto Rico Capitals and the Florida Surge even though the field conditions were not the best due to inclement weather," said Miami Head Coach Marc Miceli. "We have recruited a number of new talented players to the Kickers for the 2009 season along with our seasoned nine returning players... I was extremely pleased with the overall performance by the entire team this past weekend, and look forward to this upcoming weekend's match against Palm Beach United [on June 14th]."

The Surge were well-prepared for this match, however, the tempo was set in the first minute when Miami's Tamara Kochen was sent in on a through-ball, going in on goal on a breakaway but her shot hit the post. The Kickers would score off a corner kick on Joanna McCaughey's header for the 1-0 half-time lead.

The pace off the game was fast and both teams waged a midfield battle but the work of Miami midfielder Deidre Bass and the Kickers defense would allow only one shot on goal. In the second half, April Perry would make a great run off of Kristin Chenault's pass and the the Florida International forward would bury the ball in the upper left corner of the goal.

"April's goal was a first class goal," said Miceli. "She is playing in the zone at this time. April is working very hard for us and she is paying off big dividends for this team... We look forward for the return match vs. the Florida Surge as I am certain that they will give us a good game."

In Miami's home opener against Puerto Rico, Sam Wright would put on a show on offense, scoring two goals while notching three assists in the 7-1 win. According to Miceli, Olivia Elias would prove to be his best midfielder on the night and Rochelle Willis was his top defender.

SD UNITED 3, SAN DIEGO WFC SEALIONS 0
AJAX AMERICA 0, SD UNITED 0

SAN DIEGO, CA (06/07/09) - After back-to-back games this weekend, SD United (4-0-1 WPSL Pacific-South) would remain undefeated through five matches. United now sit on top of the Pacific-South Division after a pair of positive results against two of the top sides in the Women's Premier Soccer League.

United took to the road on Saturday, June 6th, traveling to face defending WPSL National Champion Ajax America (3-1-1 WPSL Pacific-South) in the Rolling Hills Estates of Los Angeles. University of Wisconsin's Whitney Owusu played strong defense with a blocked goal in her first start of the season. Goalkeeper Michele Dalton was solid in the net in this tough & tactical match, which would eventually end in a 0-0 draw.

SD United was back on their home field on Sunday, June 7th at Torero Stadium for a local derby against San Diego WFC (4-1-0 WPSL Pacific-South). In the 19th minute, Rebekah Patrick scored off a Melanie DeSalvo assist and Stephanie Ochs & Lindsay Browne would combine for the second goal of the match in the second half.

Ochs would make a run up the sideline and send in a perfect cross to Browne, who would finish for the 2-0 lead. At this point, SD United was holding the run of play and in the 87th minute, the third time was a charm for Maddie Tantillo. The forward battled for the ball and nailed the final goal of the match from just outside the SeaLion' penalty box for the 3-0 score.

SD United will host PSSCV-The Rooks of Santa Clarita (0-5-0 WPSL Pacific-South) this Sunday, June 14th at 4:30 p.m. at Torero Stadium on the beautiful campus of the University of San Diego. For SD United standings and more, visit http://www.sdunited.net.

WALNUT CREEK POWER 3, SAN FRANCISCO NIGHTHAWKS 1
MONTEREY BLUES 2, WALNUT CREEK POWER 4

WALNUT CREEK, CA (06/07/09) - The San Francisco Nighthawks (2-1-0 WPSL Pacific-North) dominated most of the first half in this match at the Walnut Creek Power (2-1-0 WPSL Pacific-North), but the home side would score three unanswered goals in the second half to register their second win of the weekend by a 3-1 score.

A very physical game played at a high pace with good ball movement saw the Nighthawks go up by a 1-0 score before half-time, but in the second half, it was all Power. In the 53rd minute, Taylor Nichols would score on a header assisted by Nicole Moreno and in the 77th minute, Vanessa Miskella would notch the game-winner on a one-hop volley finish off a cross.

Nichols would score her second tally of the match off another assist from Moreno in the 83rd minute to make the final 3-2 score. The day before at the Monterey Blues (1-2-0 WPSL Pacific-North), Miskella would register a hat-trick as Walnut Creek would get the 4-2 win on the road.

The Blues came out strong and their speed & creativity kept the Power on their heels for most of the first half. Walnut Creek managed to get on the scoreboard early in the match, though, thanks to a perfectly executed direct free-kick by Miskella.

The Blues continued to come at the Power and in the end, would to out-shoot the visiting side by a 19-7 margin. Walnut Creek goalkeeper Annette Rodriguez (11 saves) was able to deny them shot after shot - several in impressive fashion. Miskella would then single-handedly create two more goal opportunities and in the 65th minute, Kiley Brown dribbled past the Blues keeper to the net the fourth and final goal.

CDSA FUTURE 0, BAY STATE SELECTS 1

DOVER, DE (06/06/09) - Jen Leaverton's goal in the 58th minute on a cross from Lindsay Cunningham gave the Bay State Selects (2-3-0 WPSL Est) a 1-0 win over the CDSA Future (0-4-0 WPSL East) at Wesley College in WPSL East Conference play. Though possession was in the favor of the Selects, CDSA was able to counter a few dangerous attacks but the defense led by Michelle Kielty and goalkeeper Emily Nahas were able to stymie any attempt on goal.

Bay State came out strong as they dominated play and pressured the Future continuously in the first 45 minutes. The second half started out with CDSA putting pressure on the Selects in the first 10 minutes, but Bay State keeper Stephanie Gordon was up to the task as she denied all three attempts.

"We had ample opportunities as we continuously possessed the ball in the CDSA's end but give CDSA credit as they hung on to finish the first half on an even slate," said Bay State Head Coach Jim Leaverton.

In the 58th minute, Cunningham would brake loose down the right side, dribbling past defenders to the eight-yard box. She would fire a perfect cross to a streaking Leaverton at the far post, who drilled the ball past the Future keeper for the game-winning goal. Leaverton and Gordon were named the Offensive and Defensive MVP's respectively for the match as the Selects would out-shoot CDSA by a 14-10 margin.

"It's good to come away with 3 points on an opponents home field, this league is incredibly competitive and anytime you get a "W" you have to feel good," said Cunningham.

"The cross from Lindsay was perfect and fortunately I was there to finish," said Leaverton.

Bay State will entertain the New England Mutiny (1-3-0 WPSL East) at Stonehill College on Friday, June 12th at 6:00 p.m. CDSA will travel to play Lancaster Inferno (WPSL East) on Saturday, June 13th at 6:30 at Hempfield H.S.

PHILADELPHIA LIBERTY 2, LONG ISLAND FURY 3

PLYMOUTH MEETING, PA (06/06/09) - Two goals by Vicki DiMartino and the game-winning goal by Jasmyne Spencer paced the Long Island Fury (2-0-0 WPSL East) to a 3-2 come-from-behind win at the Philadelphia Liberty (1-1-0 WPSL East). The Fury was down by a 2-1 score via two goals by the Liberty's Mandy Moraca before the heroics of DiMartino and Spencer.

DiMartino scored in the 8th minute off an assist by Devin Pendergast and then scored again in the 62nd minute. Spencer provided the game-winner in the 72nd minute on an assist from Boston College's Kelly Henderson. Fury goalkeeper Jillian Mastroianni made two saves.

"It was a great three points for us, especially being on the road and not having a full roster," said Fury Head Coach Paul Riley. "Emily Menges and Rosie Hayes both made impressive debuts for the Fury tonight."

Vicki DiMartino was the offensive MVP of the match while Garden City's Emily Menges was the defensive MVP. Coach Riley sounded like he was talking about the Belmont Stakes when he added, "The pace was too slow for us tonight."

The Fury return to action this Thursday, June 11th with a 6:00 p.m. match against this same Philadelphia Liberty side at Adelphi University's Competition Field. For more info, please log on to http://www.lifurysoccer.com.

SALT LAKE CITY SPARTA 3, BOISE BLITZ 0
SALT LAKE CITY SPARTA 1, UTAH STARRZ 0

WOODS CROSS, UT (06/06/09) - The SLC Sparta (3-0-1 WPSL Big Sky-North) kept their undefeated streak alive with their second consecutive home match victory on Saturday, June 6th, this time against the Boise Blitz (0-3-1 WPSL Big Sky-North). Sparta has won their last three games - two vs. the Blitz and one on June 3rd in a 1-0 win over the Utah Starzz (1-1-2 WPSL Big Sky-North).

"We have shown a lot of growth as a team in our first four games," said Sparta Coach Dennis Burrows. "We will have to continue to create and consistently finish our scoring opportunities while working as a team to rise above the competition we will face. But, I have been very pleased with the teams effort and ability to show improvement thus far in the season."

Becca Riddle has been all over the field for Sparta so far this season, creating and finishing chances on goal and over the team's first four matches has scored a team-leading three goals and two assists. Riddle had a two-goal performance on the road vs. Boise that gave Sparta their first win of the 2009 season on May 30th and also scored Sparta's first goal against the same team on June 6th - which would prove to be another game-winner.

Defender Linsey McFarland has also been impressive for Sparta but even more so are the two goals she has scored so far this season. McFarland's second goal of 2009 came on a long range blast that gave the Blitz keeper no chance for a save.

On June 3rd, Sparta had their first home game against their new state rival - the Utah Starzz - and McFarland's first tally of 2009 was the game-winner in the 50th minute off a volley after an unassisted penetrating drive towards the goal. In the last 15 minutes of the match, the Starzz stepped up their game and Sparta had to resist a barrage of dangerous balls into their box but the team's defense did a great job in withstanding the offensive pressure in the 1-0 win.

"It was good to see the Starzz play," said Burrows. "It was a tough battle and we will have our work cut for us out when we play the Starzz in the future."

Sparta now heads on the road to face last year's WPSL National Finalists in the Arizona Rush (0-2-0 WPSL Big Sky-North) on Saturday, June 13th at 7:00 p.m. at Murphey Stadium in Tucson, AZ.

SOCCERPLUS CT 2, LANCASTER INFERNO 3
NEW ENGLAND MUTINY 0, LANCASTER INFERNO 3

NEW BRITAIN, CT (06/06/09) - The Lancaster Inferno (2-1-0 WPSL East) would make an early statement in the WPSL East Conference race this summer, capping a two-day road trip with a 3-2 win over SoccerPlus CT (2-1-0 WPSL East) at Veteran's Memorial Stadium - whom they nearly defeated last season in the WPSL East Semifinal at this same venue. After defeating the New England Mutiny (1-3-0 WPSL East) by a 3-0 score the night before at Agawam H.S., the Inferno were victorious over two sides that had a combined 19-1 record in WPSL East play last year.

"Against two programs that have an unbelievable history, we will take it," said Lancaster Head Coach Doug Harris. "You'll see every one of these girls smiling as big as you can imagine... You just never know in this league from roster to roster how the girls will come together [so] I'm very pleased with the way they've been playing."

Just like the match against Mutiny, the Inferno held the run of play against the Reds with three of the game's five goals occuring in a 10-minute span during first half action. The Reds' Jen Montgomery would score in the 24th minute off an assist from Casey Frobey but Lancaster would answer in the 34th minute via an offensive display from Teresa Rynier.

Getting a pass from Megan Monroig, faking to her right and ultimately dribbling a bit to her left, Rynier ripped a left-footed shot from the top of the box past SoccerPlus CT goalkeeper Caity Casey (15 saves) into the left corner of the net for the 1-1 score. Less than a minute later, the Reds went up 2-1 as Montgomery set up Becky Ryan for another goal from distance.

Lancaster tied the game with just over a minute remaining in the first half as Rynier found Katie Lamm, who buried her sliding shot into the right side of the net. The teams entered half-time tied at 2-2, but Lancaster would score early in the second half as Monroig hooked up with Erin Hench for her second assist in the game.

Hench broke in off the right flank and lifted a left-footed shot over Casey for the eventual game-winner. Lancaster would out-shoot the Reds by a 25-6 margin. The Reds will prepare for a two-game road trip next weekend, against the A.C. Diablos on Friday and Philadelphia Liberty on Saturday.

Even during the one year they didn't make the WPSL playoffs, two things were constant for the New England Mutiny - they did not lose three straight games and they did not lose at home. In front of a crowd of 708 on a cool, rain-threatening night, the Mutiny lost their third straight game for the first time in franchise history and lost it at Agawam High School.

Katie Lamm, Megan Monroig and Ariel Gordon scored for Lancaster, as the visitors sent the Mutiny to their third loss in four starts, and put them in a tough position to qualify for postseason play. Newcomer Sydney Stoll - a junior at University of Massachusetts - came closest to scoring for the Mutiny, hitting a shot in the 35th minute that hit both the crossbar and right post but did not go in.

"To travel into the Mutiny stadium and shut them out, much less even win seems to be somewhat of an anomaly," said Harris. "From what I understand the Mutiny have never lost at home. As you can imagine, I am thrilled to death with the team's performance... Last year, we were in New Britain to play the Reds in the first round of the playoffs, losing the game so to be back here a year later and come away with the win... no complaints here."

Mutiny goaltender Lauren Brodeur of Wilbraham made seven saves as Lancaster dominated play. New England will travel to face Bay State this weekend while Lancaster will play host to the CDSA Future on Saturday, June 13th at Hempfield H.S. at 6:30 p.m.

TSC MARYLAND PRIDE 2, NEW YORK ATHLETIC CLUB 0

COLUMBIA, MD (06/06/09) - TSC Maryland Pride midfielder Anabel Jimenez continued her assault on opposing goalkeepers on Saturday, netting her third goal in as many games in a 2-0 victory over the New York Athletic Club. The goal set the tone for the Pride (2-1-1 WPSL East) who held the run of play over New York (2-3-0 WPSL East) from start to finish, out-shooting their conference opponent by a 8-4 margin.

Jimenez scored in the 13th minute when midfielder Christy Bush found her inside the six yard box on a cross from the left side. New York A.C. goalkeeper Tyler Griffin got a piece of Jimenez's first attempt, but the ball stayed on the goal line and she tapped the ball in.

Jimenez nearly struck again two minutes after scoring, when she caught Griffin a bit too far off her line. From about 20 yards out, she let a shot go and Griffin had to fully extend to make the save.

New York almost evened the score in the 41st minute when Allyson Gordon collected a loose ball at the top of the Pride box and dribbled in at goalkeeper Bevin English. English (4 saves) - making her TSC debut - was equal to the task, deflecting Gordon's point-blank attempt at the near post. The chance would prove to be New York's only real threat of the game.

Griffin (six saves) did her best to keep New York in the game during first half stoppage time when Jimenez picked out forward Karyn Farrar on a low cross. Farrar's shot sent Griffin sprawling back to her left to make the save.

However, a handball by Griffin just outside the box would prove costly in the 50th minute. While the New York defense was still getting organized for the ensuing free kick, forward Zanti nailed a ball just under the crossbar for her second goal of the season.
