New Sunshine Conference side has signed a good blend of youth, experience from both local & regional talent
PENSACOLA, FL (05/09/11) - The Gulf Coast Texans of the Sunshine Conference of the
Women's Premier Soccer League (WPSL) have announced their initial roster for the Summer 2011 Season. The Texans inaugural season will feature some familiar names from the local area as well as some established collegiate stars. Leading the way will be
Shakira Duncan (above), one of the most decorated players in University of West Florida soccer history who was a two-time NCAA National Scoring Champion and two-time All-American.
Shakira Duncan will joined up top by UWF team-mate and fellow Jamaican
Tina Murray. A very creative player, Murray was named to the Daktronics All-American Honorable Mention team, the All-South Team and Gulf South Conference (GSC) Team. Head Coach David Kemp was very excited by all who turned out at tryouts and is looking forward to their first season in the WPSL.
"I think the squad has a good balance of exciting young talent, many of them local players, and some quality experienced players who will help them develop and mature," said Kemp. "It's great for us to have players like Alicia and Shakira on board, with top level playing experience, who can lead by example and bring some composure to the team. It will also be good for our community to come out and see this team in action in our home games against some of the best players in the Country. We are looking forward to getting started."
The team also announce its staff for the 2011 Season, with Kemp also adding two Texan Youth products to the Coaching Staff in Matt Williams and Austin King. Gerald Praylow joins as General Manager, to provide expertise in organization and marketing.
"Gerald is a great addition to the team, and will ensure our first season is a success," said Kemp. "His personal management skills will be a valuable asset to the program. Matt and Austin both came through our program and both played at college with Matt going on to play in the USL and in New Zealand. They are young and enthusiastic and both expressed a keen interest to be involved in this exciting project.
"It's rewarding to see so many people involved on the playing side and the coaching side who have come through our program and have a genuine love for the game."
Three goalkeepers have been signed to the team, including UWF standout
Courtney Jones who holds many all-time records and was a Daktronics All-American, multiple All-Region and GSC selection.
Cagney Valloch, a Niceville High School product who currently plays for Mercer University, and
Lorna Brownlie from Glasgow, Scotland who plays for the University of Mobile round out the trio.
