Tomko (left) signs with Long Island; Montgomery (right) is hired by Florida Surge
SACRAMENTO, CA (05/14/09) - The Long Island Fury of the East Conference of the
Women's Premier Soccer League (WPSL) is pleased to two more signings to their team, going with a combination of experience & youth. Long Island welcomes 24-year-old midfielder/defender
Heather Tomko and 17-year-old midfielder
Klara Jenkins to the team for the 2009 season.
At the age of 24, Tomko will be one of the oldest players on the Fury and will be relied on for her years of experience. Jenkins plays for Albertson Fury '91 of the Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL) as well as the Trinity School Tiger varsity soccer & basketball teams, where she captains both teams.
"Heather is a tremendous asset to any club - speed, strength, determined in the tackle and a fantastic leader," said Long Island Fury head coach Paul Riley. "We have a young squad and I believe Heather will be a key component in bringing our younger players along... Heather knows how to win, she has played in a top college program and her passion for the game shows through in everything she does. She's a brilliant role model for our younger players.
"Klara has a great mind for the game... She understands tactics and reads the game extremely well. Can control the tempo of any game and her technical ability sets her apart from the crowd."
Tomko was honored as First Team All-State at North Carroll High School in Maryland, and the Maryland ODP & Region I standout then went to Penn State, where she received the Nittany Lions' Unsung Hero Award and made the Big Ten All-Academic Team. Penn State was Big Ten champions all four years that she was there and Heather describes playing in the 2005 NCAA Final Four as her best moment ever on a soccer field.
Jenkins won four State Cups with Albertson Fury '90, was elected to Ivy League soccer and basketball plus received the Headmaster's Cup. Klara has already committed to playing college soccer for the Colgate Red Raiders in the fall of 2010.
The Fury begin WPSL play on Saturday, May 30th for a 6:00 p.m. kick-off vs. the New England Mutiny at Adelphi University's Competition Field. The Mutiny eliminated the Fury by a 4-2 score from the WPSL East Semifinals last season.
The Florida Surge of the WPSL Sunshine Conference have hired a new coach, as former North Carolina State University, WUSA & WPSL star
Kim Montgomery will take over the reins this season. Montgomery was a three-time All-Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) selection at North Carolina State, helping the team make the NCAA Tournament each season of her tenure - including a Final Four appearance.
Kim is currently in fifth place in school history for points scored (95), seventh in goals (32) and third in assists (31) while recently being named to the ACC's Top Women Soccer Players of All-Time Team. Yet, it will be her coaching expertise the Surge will need, and Montgomery is more than qualified with coaching experience at the collegiate (Virginia Tech) & youth soccer levels.
Kim continued her playing career with the W-League's Raleigh Wings, where the team won two of three National Championships during her stay. Montgomery enjoyed great success during that time, receiving League MVP honors in 1998 and leading the league in assists each year. In 2000, the WUSA was created and was drafted in the 6th Round with the 43rd pick overall by the Carolina Courage. Carolina went from last place her in first season to beating Mia Hamm and the Washington Freedom for the WUSA Championship in her second season.
Gary Pritchard - a mental conditioning coach - has agreed to work with the Adirondack Lynx of the WPSL East to bring the highest level of training to the Athletes that will be playing with the Lynx this summer. Pritchard is from Ramsey, NJ and his organization - Will Beats Skill (http://www.willbeatskill.com) - offers a wide range of programs for soccer players, as well as other sports, and Gary helps athletes by giving them all of the tools he/she needs to compete consistently at an elite level.
"There are 4 pillars to the game of soccer; technical, tactical, fitness, and mental," said Pritchard. "My job is to help players get themselves in a zone where they are focused and able to cocentrate on an end result. Through mental imagery we can train the body so that it begins to develop muscle memory allowing players to have more confidence."
"As a soccer coach I have watched Gary work magic with athletes that really need to 'train their brains'," said Lynx Owner/G.M. PJ Motsiff. "Gary leaves players brimming with confidence after his sessions... Gary has been working with our female academy players for 2 years. The confidence and consistency that these players have when they step on the pitch is amazing. Having Gary involved this summer will allow our WPSL players to truly develop as individual players and as a team."
Jessica Strang (Schalmont, NY), the Liberty League Rookie of the Year from Union College, and
Becca Lee (Bethlehem, NY), and America East All-Rookie team from University at Albany, have been added to the Adirondack Lynx Roster. The two new signings will be a part of Adirondack's return to the U.S. National Soccer Hall of Fame, as the Lynx will play there for the first time since losing the 2006 WPSL East Final to the Long Island Fury.
The 2:00 p.m. match will be played against the visiting CDSA Future. CDSA's head coach Wayne Grocott will be the assistant coach for the Philadelphia WPS team scheduled to begin play in 2010. The Legends of Soccer Tournament is an annual event hosted by the National Soccer Hall of Fame and the Lynx game will be part of the girls U-10 to U-14 weekend.
"The WPSL, Soccer Hall of Fame and the Adirondack Lynx are all grassroots efforts, so anytime we can take this level of a team somewhere new to entertain youth girls... we go!," said Motsiff. "We have played a few times at the Hall of Fame and are looking forward to returning again this summer. The environment is first class at the Hall of Fame and the grass fields they have there may be the best we will play on in the Northeast."
In a move that solidifies both the front and back lines, Dallas Premier S.C. of the WPSL Big Sky-South moved closer to finalizing its roster for the 2009 season.
Lauren Olson, a St. Louis University graduating senior, is just another of the many Sting '87 Royal players to sign with the Premier.
Kristie Daus was a redshirt freshman forward/midfielder at Penn State last year and is transfering to St. Louis University this fall.
Another piece to the Dallas Premier puzzle was added with the signing of defensive midfielder
Jessica Jarrell from Oklahoma State of the Big 12 Conference. Jarrell is also the ninth former member of Sting '87 Royal - who were seven-time Regional Champions and finished third at Nationals four times - to sign with the Premier. The team also struck it rich with the signing University of Maryland's
Caitlin McDowell, who joins former teammate Daus in the Premier midfield.
The Maine Tide of the WPSL East Conference have their new mentor ready for their opening matches this weekend, as
Carmen Masalin will lead the team this season. She has been coaching at the college, high school, club, and youth levels in Atlanta, GA, Charlotte, NC, Rochester, NY and Oneonta, NY for the last 10 years. In 2006, Masalin served as the assistant varsity coach for her alma mater - St. Pius X Catholic High School - helping to lead the Lions to the Georgia AAAA State Semifinals.
In the same year, she also coached the Norcross Soccer Academy. Masalin spent four seasons in North Carolina coaching the Charlotte United and worked for eight years as a counselor at the Eurosport Soccer Camp. She has also worked in International soccer camps in Toronto, Ontario. She is currently Women's assistant coach for Hartwick College. She was a four-year starter and two year team captain for NCAA Division II Queens University of Charlotte, NC and is also a USSF licensed coach.
The So Cal Rush of the WPSL Pacific Conference will have a lot of experience leading their team this season, as
M.J. Tate has been tapped for their head coach vacancy. Tate holds a USSF "A" License, UEFA B License and a English FA Coaching Certificate and is currently the President & Technical Director for So Cal Rush.
Most recently, M.J. was a Director Of Coaching for Utah Rush, and prior to that he was Technical Director at Inter Futbol Club in Sandy, Utah.
