SACRAMENTO, CA (01/28/10) - This statement is in regards to the news of the state of professional women's soccer in the Los Angeles-area - announced by many press sources - and the possible ceasing of operations of the Los Angeles Sol of
Women's Professional Soccer (WPS), due to issues surrounding the securing of new ownership. Women's Premier Soccer League Commissioner Jerry Zanelli is adamant in the WPSL's support of the not only the team and WPS, but women's soccer in general in the Los Angeles region.
The WPSL has connections with WPS as 2009 Pacific Conference champion & National Runner-up Ajax America were the professional affiliate of the Sol last summer. Six standouts from the WPS regular season champions helped propel the team into the Final Four hosted by the Long Island Fury.
However, the host side - led by current WPS Philadelphia Head Coach Paul Riley - and his youthful & talented Fury squad out-lasted Brian Boswell's repeat title-bid by a narrow 1-0 verdict in the 2009 WPSL Final.
"We're very disappointed to hear the news that's surrounding the Los Angeles Sol and professional women's soccer in that region," said Zanelli. "The WPSL supports WPS and women's soccer as a whole in Los Angeles, and we hope its not too late for the highest-level in our sport to remain there."
As a league, the WPSL are concerned about the status of not only the current Sol players, but those who were either selected not only by Los Angeles but other teams in the recent WPS Draft held at the NSCAA Convention in Philadelphia, PA and/or those prospects who've been invited to pre-season training camps. With the possible dispersal draft of the L.A. Sol players, it maybe difficult for both drafted players & invitees alike to make another WPS team at this juncture.
Yet, it still may not be too late to save the franchise. If another investor group jumped into the fray within the next week, scheduling for the Sol for the upcoming season could be easily worked out in time.
