More Albertson S.C. standouts sign with defending WPSL National Champions
ROCKVILLE CENTRE, NY (04/30/10) - The Long Island Fury of the East Conference of the
Women's Premier Soccer League (WPSL) continue to cement their foundation through the Albertson S.C. system, as they've recently announced the additions of midfielder
Rachel Blum, midfielder
Jennifer Gibbons, forward/midfielder
Shannon Kearney, midfielder/defender
Jane Wallis, forward/midfielder
Katherine Greer and forward
Taylor Katz to their 2010 roster.
Blum plays soccer for Albertson Fury '91 and the Lindenhurst H.S. senior will attend Syracuse University this fall along with Fury teammate Brittany Anghel. At Lindenhurst, she was honored as All-County twice in soccer, All-League in both winter and spring track for the mile, 400-meter hurdles and 400-meter relay and received the Suffolk Zone Award.
"Rachel is your prototype central midfielder," said Fury Director of Football Paul Riley. "Great engine, superb tackler and a battle driven attitude to win everything in the midfield area."
Gibbons is the captain of the Albertson Fury '91 and also plays for Bellport H.S. plus the Eastern New York & Region I Olympic Development Programs (ODP). At Bellport, Jennifer was honored as both All-State and All-County in 2008 and 2009, All-Conference in 2007, Student Council Secretary, Honor Roll Student, Homecoming Queen and will be competing for the St. John's Red Storm this fall after the Fury season.
"Jennifer is a bright, efficient player with a tremendous engine," said Riley. "A true box-to-box midfielder with ability, vision, good technique and a thirst for tackling."
Kearney plays club soccer for Albertson Fury '91 and school soccer for New Hyde Park Memorial H.S. and has been honored as All-State, All-Long Island, All-County and All-Class. Shannon will be playing for the University of Delaware Blue Hens this fall after the Fury season.
"Shannon is a strong, impactful forward with pace and a nose for the goal," said Riley. "She sits on the shoulder of the last defender and is a handful to say the least. Dangerous and brave in the penalty area, she's the prototype English-style center forward."
Wallis is returning to the team for the 2010 season and will be travelling 100 miles round-trip a few times per week from her home in Briarcliff Manor to Long Island to play and train with the Fury. The soon-to-be George Washington University Colonial plays club soccer for Albertson Fury '91 and also competes for the Eastern New York & Region I ODP Teams.
"Jane is a natural lefty with bags of energy, fire and skill," said Riley. "Destined for great things both at college and the WPSL level."
Greer's standout soccer career includes playing for the Albertson Fury '91 and the Eastern New York & Region I ODP Teams. In school soccer, she played for St. Anthony's High School and will be playing this fall for the University of Cincinnati Bearcats.
"Katie is a smart, crafty little dynamo who is superb around the box and in front of goal," said Riley. "She scores big goals and produces in big moments when the game is on the line."
Katz plays club soccer for Albertson Fury '92 and the Eastern New York ODP Team. At Jericho H.S., the National Honor Society member was All-Class A varsity in 2008 and 2009, Most Valuable Player in 2007, Rookie of the Year in 2006 and has already committed to George Washington University for the fall of 2011.
"Taylor is a spark plug who is a pain to opposing defenses," said Riley. "She makes dangerous runs and knows how to unsettle defenders. Clever around the box, and links the midfield into the final third really well."
