Millburn goalkeeper Lia Fierro (above) shuts out defending WPSL Champion Long Island
LONG ISLAND FURY 0, MILLBURN MAGIC 1MADISON, NJ (06/04/10) - The Millburn Magic (3-1-0 East-Central) made sure they made up for the loss in the 2009 East Conference Final to eventual WPSL Champion Long Island (3-1-0 East-Central), beating the Fury by a 1-0 score in Central Division action. Magic Goalkeeper Lia Fierro handed the Fury their first shut-out since before the 2009 playoffs.
"[The Fury] always looked dangerous on counters," said Millburn Head Coach Andy Sones. "We held up very well, though. The back line simply dealt with them."
In the second half, the Fury made the opening push as Kelly Henderson forced Fierro to make a stop, resulting in a counter-attack opportunity. Lina Staropoli charged up the field and laid the ball off to Kim Malecki on the left. Hitting the ball with power, Long Island keeper Arianna Efstathiou was unable to parry away Malecki's shot, which carried up and over her hands and into the net for her third goal in as many games.
DALLAS PREMIER 1, HOUSTON SOUTH SELECT 1HOUSTON, TX (06/04/10) - Dallas Premier S.C. (0-0-1 Big-Sky South) traveled to Houston Friday night to battle the Houston South Select (0-1-1 Big-Sky South) in the Big Sky-South Division opener for both teams. With them, the Premier brought all their high expectations from last season's Final Four appearance while South Select came in with no expectations and only one thing in mind - bring your game on and we'll bring ours. The home side did just that in the 1-1 draw.
"We out-shoot them with 15 out of 18 shots being saved by their goalie to their one, and we come away with a tie," said Dallas Head Coach Brian Flanagan. "We have got to finish. The game isn't shots on goal, its shots in the goal and that score was 1-1."
In the 65th minute, Dallas forward Sterling Smith took a pass out of the back from defender Alicia Marshall and drove the ball down the sideline. Smith sent in a near-post cross where forward Brittany Slyman one-touched the well-placed ball into the net for the 1-0 lead.
Seven minutes later, South Select's forward Kaitlyn Ross found herself all alone after she was put in behind the Premier defenders. Dallas goalkeeper Meagan Wilson was caught off her line and the ball was easily placed over her for the eventual 1-1 draw.
BOSTON AZTEC BREAKERS RESERVES 4, BOSTON AZTEC U-23 0LANCASTER, MA (06/05/10) - The Boston Aztec Breakers Reserves (3-0-0 WPSL East-Northeast) took on the Boston Aztec U-23's (1-1-0 WPSL East-Northeast) as part of the Women's Soccer Showcase at the Massachusetts Youth Soccer State Cup. Leah Blayney (Australian National Team) scored her league leading sixth & seventh goals for the Breakers Reserve as they defeated the U-23's by a 4-0 score.
"This was a good test for us today. said Reserves Head Coach Mike Kersker. "We possessed the ball well and capitalized on our opportunities."
The Reserves got on the board first when Blayney knocked a through ball from Tiffany Weimer (Boston Breakers) under the cross bar, beating U-23 goalkeeper Erin Quinlan (Syracuse University). Weimer scored the second goal two minutes later, chipping a ball over the onrushing Quinlan.
In the 30th minute, Becky Ryan (Marquette University) challenged a clearance from a U-23 defender deflecting the ball to Blayney. With her back to the goal, she turned and volleyed the ball past the diving Quinlan. Mandi Back (University of Dayton) completed the scoring, knocking a bouncing ball in the box into the side netting in the 35th minute.
CALIFORNIA STORM 1, NORTH BAY F.C. WAVE 0NOVATO, CA (06/06/10) - The California Storm (4-1-0 Pacific-North) has a lot of history & name recognition on its side, with the Storm's roster including former U.S. Women's National Team star Brandi Chastain, Brazil legend midfielder Sissi, former pro & U.S. U-23 Cori Alexander and current USWNT forward Alex Morgan. But none of that mattered to the fledging North Bay F.C. Wave (1-1-0 Pacific-North) when the team met California at Novato's San Marin High School, even though in the end they would drop the 1-0 Pacific-North Division decision.
"It was exciting for the fans and really illustrated the high quality of play in the WPSL," said North Bay Head Coach Quezada said. "Alex Morgan - who scored the Storm's goal - just recently returned from a camp with the full USWNT, and one of less than a handful of collegians who were invited. This is just excellent soccer and great entertainment for the whole family."
The Storm started fast, controlled the tempo and in the 19th minute, the Morgan found a seam in the Wave defense, but was taken down near the top of the 18-yard box by a Wave defender. The Cal star buried the resulting penalty kick for the eventual game-winner. The Wave battled back and with minutes to go, still had the opportunity to earn a draw when Katie Knopp's hurried 22-yard strike sailed just over the Storm's goal.
