MIAMI KICKERS F.C. 0, SOUTH FLORIDA STRIKERS 0FORT MYERS, FL (06/11/10) - 2009 Sunshine Conference champion Miami Kickers F.C. was forced to settle for a scoreless draw on Friday night in a match against the South Florida Strikers. The Kickers (0-1-1 WPSL Sunshine) launched 19 shots - including four that struck the post - but were unable to find the back of the net while South Florida (0-3-1 WPSL Sunshine) was awarded a penalty kick in the 80th minute, but midfielder Paula Zuluaga could not put the ball on target.
Miami threatened early and often in the first half and ten minutes into the match, forward Laura Weinberg struck the post. Two more shots would hit the pipes for the Kickers in the first half, including a strike from Jenn Martin and a free kick from Haleigh Stremanos.
The start of the second half was delayed due to a storm in the area, and both sides got off to a sluggish start after the break. The Kickers snapped out of it first, and began to bombard South Florida keeper Sara Setzer with shots, particularly in the final 20 minutes.
On a South Florida counterattack, Miami defender Shante Chevannes made a sliding tackle just inside the 18 and was whistled for the foul. Zuluaga's penalty kick sailed high and wide right, however, keeping the match scoreless.
BOSTON AZTEC BREAKERS RESERVES 1, CFC PASSION 0BEVERLY, MA (06/12/10) - In an entertaining match with spectacular saves from both goalkeepers, the Boston Aztec Breakers Reserves (4-0 WPSL East-Northeast) edged the CFC Passion (3-0-1 WPSL East-Northeast) on a 85th minute goal from former Boston University star Taleen Dimirdjian. Rebecca Mays served a low ball across the box to Dimirdjian, who directed the ball low into the far side netting.
"Taleen (Dimirdjian) had a big goal and (Rebecca) Ritchie was huge in goal for us today," said Boston Aztec Head Coach Mike Kersker.
The first half was a battle in the midfield, with the Aztec holding the majority of the possession, but the pace of the match picked up in the second half. After the Aztec goal, the Passion started a frantic final 15 minutes of the match, when Kelly Scalora sent a hard shot to the near post and Aztec goalkeeper Rebecca Ritchie made a diving save.
The Aztec spent the last 5 minutes of the match on the defensive and Ritchie was forced into a tip over the cross bar when Torrey Leroy settled a clearance from a corner. Ritchie was forced into another diving save off the ensuing corner and the referee blew the final whistle of the match.
LONG ISLAND FURY 0, LANCASTER INFERNO 1UNIONDALE, NY (06/12/10) - The undefeated Lancaster Inferno (3-0-2 WPSL East-Central) topped the Long Island Fury (3-2-0 WPSL East-Central) by a 1-0 score at Mitchel Athletic Complex on a sensational 25-yard goal from Casey Boyer. The first half was a midfield battle but both teams came out of the locker rooms attacking in the second half.
The Fury's Charlotte Miller had a breakaway in the 51st minute with her shot going just wide of the net. Fury keeper Brittany Anghel made a point-blank save of Katie Lamm in the 74th minute. But Anghel or no other goalkeeper could have stopped Boyer's strike in the 79th minute.
In the dying minutes, Devin Pendergast of Babylon made two piercing dribbles along the goal line but the Fury still were shut out. Anghel made five saves while her counterpart Lancaster keeper Amanda McGowen made three saves. Lancaster had a 3-1 corner kick advantage.
"We had no dynamic play upfront," said Fury Head Coach Michael Demakis.
