2009 Sunshine champions Miami are pushed to the brink after 0-0 draw vs. FSA Freedom
FSA FREEDOM 0, MIAMI KICKERS F.C. 0PLANTATION, FL (06/27/10) - After an offensive fireworks display in Friday night's 5-0 win over Palm Beach United (3-2-1 WPSL Sunshine), the host Miami Kickers F.C. (2-1-2 WPSL Sunshine) was unable to find the back of the net against Sunshine Conference leaders FSA Freedom (4-0-2 WPSL Sunshine) on Sunday, settling for a 0-0 draw. The Kickers out-shot the Freedom by an astonishing 26-6 margin, as the visitors were missing six starters in this match.
The draw keeps the Kickers in the race for a second consecutive Sunshine Conference title. However, Miami will have to win its final three regular season matches - including the end of the regular season rematch with Freedom in Orlando on July 17th - to assure themselves a spot in the WPSL playoff match vs. the Midwest Conference champion.
FSA Freedom threatened early in the first half, forcing Miami keeper Victoria Alonzo (296-minute long shutout streak) to make two of her three saves. In the 22nd minute, Kickers forward Laura Weinberg beat two Freedom defenders for a breakaway but FSA goalkeeper Kelly Sisley made an excellent save, but that scoring chance would shift the momentum in the match.
The Kickers controlled possession decisively in the second half with five corners and one dangerously-placed free kick in the waning minutes, but the go-ahead goal never came. The best scoring chance for Miami came in the 72nd minute, when a 25-yard laser from the foot of Lauren Reilly struck the crossbar.
BSC PORTLAND RAIN 1, CALIFORNIA STORM 2SACRAMENTO, CA (06/27/10) - In an exciting match played in 100-degree weather at Inderkum H.S. on Sunday, the California Storm (8-1-0 Pacific-North) ended their 2-0 weekend with a vital 2-1 victory over the former first-place team in the division - BSC Portland Rain (3-3-0 Pacific-North). Nicole Gutierrez continued her strong run of play for the Storm, notching a first half goal and assisting on Molly Nizzoli's game-winner before the Rain picked up their pace in the second half.
Gutierrez would strike in the 29th minute on an unassisted tally before setting up Nizzoli in the 48th minute. Portland's Amanda Dutra would pull one back in the 71st minute, and California would hold on for the important division win, cementing their spot at the top of the table.
In the end, the midfield play of Maureen Whitney, Sissi and Stanford star Teresa Noyola controlled the tempo of the game and led to strong scoring opportunities. However, after this past weekend's games, the Storm will need to weather some roster changes: both Ro Hernandez & Jackie Cruz are off to train with the Puerto Rican National Team; while Noyola and goalkeeper Jamie Souza are off to Germany - Noyola to play for the U.S. U-20 National Team in the World Cup and Souza for a club team.
LAFC CHELSEA 2, AJAX AMERICA 1ROLLING HILLS ESTATE, CA (06/27/10) - Sunny, summer skies heated up the LAFC Chelsea (5-3-0 Pacific-South) attack on the home pitch of division-leaders Ajax America (5-2-0 Pacific-South) on Sunday, culminating in a much-needed 2-1 victory over the 2009 WPSL National Finalists. LAFC had suffered a heart-wrenching, injury-time loss to Ajax on their home field just weeks ago, so they marched onto Nansen Field looking for revenge.
The teams faced off in a very physical match, and LAFC got the lead in the 6th minute when Ann Marie Tangorra took a through ball from Ashleigh Garmon, and bent her shot around Ajax goalkeeper Yiana Dimmitt. Ajax pushed aggressively on the counter attack but LAFC's keeper Cynthia Jocobo and the defense led by captain Shanna Hudson proved to be a brick wall.
In the second half, Ajax returned with renewed energy & persistence on the attack, but LAFC capitalized in the 58th minute by infiltrating through the Ajax defense. Tangorra sent a low cross to an oncoming Mary Ronau, who pounded it into the net from inside the box for the 2-0 lead.
Ajax denied LAFC a third goal and eventually were rewarded for their persistence in the 87th minute, when Sabrina Demonte reduced the margin to 2-1 off a pass from Shannon Cross. The Ajax victory dissipated the sour taste of Saturday's 2-1 loss to the San Diego SeaLions (4-3-1 Pacific-South) in San Diego, who are now back in the Pacific-South race themselves after their 2-0 weekend.
