WPSL WEEK 6 WRAP-UP

SoccerPlus CT couldn't stop Long Island (top) while despite their first loss of 2009, Adirondack (bottom) remains second in the WPSL East

SOCCERPLUS CT 2, LONG ISLAND FURY 3
LONG ISLAND FURY 3, PHILADELPHIA LIBERTY 2

NEW BRITAIN, CT (06/15/09) - Three different players scored for the visitors as the Long Island Fury (4-0-0 WPSL East) defeated the SoccerPlus CT Reds (2-3-1 WPSL East) by a 3-2 score in WPSL East action. All five goals were scored in the first half.

Scoring the first two Fury goals were Karin Simonian off an assist by Kelly Henderson, then Vicki DiMartino off an assist by Simonian. The game-winning goal came in the 38th minute, as DiMartino was sent in on a breakaway and would then cross the ball to Jasmyne Spencer, who put the ball in the net.

For the home side, Leah Blayney off a corner kick and Catherine Nathans (off an assist from Beth McGill) would net goals for the Reds but to no avail. All five goals occurred in the the first 37 minutes of the match.

"I was very pleased with our effort tonight, particularly with most of the team playing a few games in the past week," said Long Island Fury Head Coach Paul Riley. "Deanna Murino was very, very good in midfield tonight in her debut for the Fury this year. Karin Simonian was excellent... Vicki DiMartino was again the Offensive Player of the Game.

"I dropped Kelly Henderson from midfield to defense in the second half to settle the defense down and I thought that she was the Defensive Player of the Game. Now, the players can get some rest and prepare for a tough game at the New England Mutiny on Saturday night."

Brittany Anghel of East Meadow made her Long Island Fury debut by playing goal in the first half and made two saves. North Bellmore's Danielle Ippolito made 10 saves in the second half.

"I asked them to show more intensity [at half-time], more passion, more commitment, said Reds Head Coach Chris Bart-Williams. "They were going through the motions. So that was really it. I'll give them a little bit of leeway for the fact that we had a game Friday, game Saturday, game Monday, I'll give them that. But, you know what? It's a high level [of soccer], you've got to do it... We just didn't show enough."

On June 11th, the Fury defeated the Philadelphia Liberty (2-2-0 WPSL East) by a 3-1 score at foggy Competition Field, on the campus of Adelphi University. The Fury opened the scoring in the 11th minute when DiMartino took a pass from Henderson and scored from a sharp angle from five yards.

The lead doubled in the 26th minute when DiMartino fed a pass to Hannah Cerrone, whose 25-yard shot eluded Liberty goalkeeper Meghan Walker. Philadelphia got back in the game in the 53rd minute, when Whitney Weinraub scored from five yards past Fury keeper Jillian Mastroianni. A Mastroianni punt in the 68th minute bounced over the heads of the Liberty defense, DiMartino ran on to it and scored on a breakaway from 15 yards.

"I was very pleased with our performance, especially with a depleted roster," said Riley. "Just like last Saturday night, Vicki DiMartino was again the difference. I'm really happy that we were able to take six points from a good Philadelphia team in the span of one week."

Long Island's next game is this Saturday night, June 20th at 7:05 pm at the New England Mutiny (1-3-0 WPSL East) and their next home game is Wednesday night, June 24th at Adelphi University's Competition Field in Garden City vs. the Millburn Magic (2-3-1 WPSL East).

ARIZONA RUSH 1, SALT LAKE CITY SPARTA 0
ARIZONA RUSH 4, SALT LAKE CITY SPARTA 0

TUSCON, AZ (06/14/09) - After a stong start to the 2009 season, Salt Lake City Sparta (3-2-1 WPSL Big Sky-North) dropped two games on the road this past Saturday & Sunday to the 2008 WPSL National Finalist Arizona Rush (2-1-1 WPSL Big Sky-North) by 4-0 and 1-0 scores, respectively. Over the weekend, the Arizona offense was led by U.S. U-20 & Washington State University star Kiersten Dallstream (3 goals overall) including the 85th minute game-winner in the 1-0 victory on June 14th.

Sparta Head Coach Dennis Burrows felt it was a tough weekend for the team, but was pleased with the way the team re-grouped after the 4-0 loss on June 13th.

"After a rough first half on the road, our players needed an attitude adjustment and needed to play harder for one another," said Burrows. "I'm not pleased we lost both games, but was pleased with the effort and character showed by this team."

In Sunday's match, both teams fought it out in a close-knit battle in the first half with the score 0-0 at half-time. The strikers for Sparta - Lauren Hair and Linsey McFarland - along with midfielders Ari Wood and Morgan Skeen did well to control the middle of the field and keep pressure on the Rush defense.

The visitors appeared to have the momentum late in the match, even after being forced to play with a player down due to a red card ejection early in the second half. 2008 WPSL Final Four Tournament selection & University of Arizona center back Analisa Marquez would orchestrate the counter-attack that led to Dallstream's game-winner in the 85th minute.

The day before, SLC would give up three first-half goals and lose another player to ejection in the second half in the 4-1 loss. After half-time, the Sparta came out strong and focused led by center back Lauren Bluth in the second half but to no avail.

F.C. TWENTE3 IL 0, OHIO PREMIER WOMEN'S S.C. 3
CHICAGO BREEZE UNITED 0, OHIO PREMIER WOMEN'S S.C. 2

CHICAGO, IL (06/14/09) - Ohio Premier Women's S.C. (3-0-0 WPSL Midwest) traveled to Chicago for two matches this past weekend against the Chicago United Breeze (0-1-0 WPSL Midwest) and F.C. Twente3 IL (0-1-0 WPSL Midwest). OPWSC would be led by 2008 Midwest Goalkeeper of the Year Lauren Robertson in both shut-out wins by 3-0 and 2-0 scores, respectively.

On Sunday, Ohio Premier went up top in the 43rd minute vs. FCT3 when University of Dayton standout Kelly Blumenschein touched home her first career WPSL goal at the back post. University of Memphis' Amanda Olszewski provided her signature flip throw to the near post and Kellen Shields - an OP U-18 standout - flicked the ball to the back post for Blumenschein to tap home.

In the 58th minute, Allie Fries (a former OP youth player & University of Virginia alum) scored off a corner kick. The final tally of the game came in the 69th minute when University of Dayton's Allison Giner scored from 16 yards out with a right-footed volley that eluded the Chicago goalkeeper. Robertson and the entire defense led by Katies Davies - a former OP youth player and junior at UNC-Charlotte - recorded the second shutout of the season.

On Saturday, Ohio Premier defeated Chicago by a 2-0 score on goals by Jordan Hilbrands and Sara Vaughan. Jordan - a junior at the University of Illinois - redirected a blistering shot from left back Megan Minnix. An OP U-16 player making her WPSL debut, Vaughan scored off a goal-mouth scramble and buried a left footed shot from 15 yards out.

Robertson recorded her first shutout of the season and came up with a huge save diving to her left and deflecting a sure goal away. OPWSC will play their rubber match against Carmel United S.C. at Carmel High School on July 5th.

SD UNITED 6, PSSCV-THE ROOKS 0
CLAREMONT STARS 0, SD UNITED 1

SAN DIEGO, CA (06/14/09) – SD United of the Pacific-South Division defeated PSSCV-The Rooks (6-0 W) and Claremont Stars (1-0 W) in back-to-back games this past weekend. The two victories gave SD United their third straight win as helped them maintain their position on top of the division for the second week in a row with a 6-0-1 record (19 points).

Playing PSSCV (0-7-0 WPSL Pacific-South) at home at Torero Stadium on June 14th, SD United was ked by the midfield play of Melanie DeSalvo - who was a firecracker all weekend as she counter-attacked with intensity and constantly pushed forward. Beating her mark, DeSalvo scored only seven minutes into the contest off a cross from Lindsay Browne (2 goals, assist).

The pair of Browne and Rebekah Patrick (1 goal, 2 assists) were a true dynamic duo throughout the game. Not to be out-done, in the 89th minute newcomer Taylor Wright scored her first goal in the WPSL off a header from a corner kick by Debs Brereton to make the final score of 6-0.

SD United traveled on the road on June 13th, coming away with a 1-0 win over Claremont Stars (3-3-1 WPSL Pacific-South). In the 33rd minute of the match, Browne took advantage at the top of the box with a solo shot deep to the right corner post, putting SD United in the lead for good at 1-0.

DeSalvo emerged as a solid defender, transitioning quickly and pressuring her mark. SD United goalkeeper Tiffany Apple knocked a crucial shot over the crossbar in the 83rd minute, sealing SD United's victory.

SD United will host West Coast F.C. (1-5-1 WPSL Pacific-South) this Sunday, June 21st at 4:30 p.m. at Torero Stadium on the beautiful campus of the University of San Diego. Halftime give-aways include L.A. Galaxy tickets.

SO CAL RUSH 2, WEST COAST F.C. 1
SAN DIEGO WFC SEALIONS 4, SO CAL RUSH 1

VICTORVILLE, CA (06/14/09) - An injury-time goal by Shalayne Janis against West Coast F.C. gave the So Cal Rush (2-5-0 WPSL Pacific-South) a much deserved win on June 14th. An exciting game looked like it was going to end in a 1-1 draw, until the counter-attack tally gave the home side a needed win against a very well organized and physically side.

"I thought it was going to be one of those days again," said So Cal Rush Head Coach M.J. Tate. "However, the girls showed amazing fighting spirit, character and composure to win it at the death."

This was a complete performance for So Cal Rush and they proved it by hard work, sound fundamentals and playing a tactically-sound game. The home side was disappointed, though, to go into the locker room at half-time tied at 0-0 after outshooting West Coast F.C. by a 16-2 margin.

In the second half, it would be only a matter of time before So Cal Rush would get on the scoreboard, as they continued to pressure the WCFC defense. The first goal came on a great five-pass combination sequence ending in a great through-ball from Rie Sawaii to Brianna Moore, who slotted home from inside of 10 yards.

After the goal, the So Cal Rush side appeared to lose their composure, which would lead to a series of free kicks and West Coast F.C.'s equalizer on a shot that gave goalkeeper Laura Lyons no chance. Yet, aside from an amazing double-save from Lyons to deny an easy goal-scoring opportunity, the home side would hold the run of play the rest of the game.

In the 91st minute, Auna Janis sliced through the West Coast defense on the right flank and sent in a far-post cross to her sister Shalayne, who powered the shot into the roof of the net for the 2-1 win. The day before, defensive lapses and a lack of quality finishing by the visiting So Cal Rush would give the San Diego WFC SeaLions (5-2-0 WPSL Pacific-South) the 4-1 win at Cathedral Catholic H.S.

Giving away three goals (one on an own goal) in the first 10 minutes of the match dented any hope of the visiting side to come away with a win. Shalayne Janis would come in for Lyndsey Wilson and immediately bolster a stuttering forward line.

Her impact was almost immediate inside of 10 minutes, scoring a wonderful finish from a Stepahanie Shiozaki assist for her first WPSL goal. Going into the locker room at half-time down by a 3-1 deficit was too much for So Cal Rush to come back from. In the second half, Janis had an open-goal opportunity but her shot was not hard enough and was cleared off the line.

"Bottom line is that the players have got to learn to concentrate for 90 minutes, our season could look so very different if that was the case," said Tate. "The learning curve for some of the players has been very steep, but we see improvement and will keeping teaching them to play at this level."

It was however, pleasing for us as staff to watch the players give every effort to make a comeback in the second half. They really gave it a good go and could have made the game 3-2 had Shalayne Janis's shot into an open goal been harder but it was a little week and it was cleared off the line.

ADIRONDACK LYNX 4, TSC MARYLAND PRIDE 2
MILLBURN MAGIC 3, ADIRONDACK LYNX 1

FORT ANN, NY (06/13/09) - After a tough 3-1 loss at the Millburn Magic on June 10th, the Adirondack Lynx (4-1-0 WPSL East) bounced back in strong fashion by defeating the under-manned TSC Maryland Pride (2-2-1 WPSL East) by a 4-2 score at Golden Goal Park on June 12th. This the best start for the Lynx in the team's four-year history in the WPSL, good for second place in the WPSL East behind undefeated 5-0-0 Boston - who thumped the Maine Tide (0-4-1 WPSL East) by an 8-0 score off a 4-goal performance from reigning WPSL East Player of the Year Mary-Frances Monroe on June 13th.

After a strong start to the game for the Pride, the visitors went down a goal in the 15th minute as last-minute TSC Maryland goalkeeper Patti Carroll could not save a 35-yard shot that went in under the crossbar. The Pride then settled down and and after some nice build-up play, Christy Bush was sprung thru for a one-on-one but the Lynx keeper came up with a great save to preserve Adirondack's 1-0 score.

The Pride paid for their missed chances in the 42nd minute, when the Lynx showed their creative play and found themselves with a 1v1 opportunity on Carroll to make the 2-0 score at half-time. The second half started much the same as the first with the Pride knocking on the door, and in the 52nd minute, Anabel Jimenez pulled one back as after some fancy footwork at the top of the penalty area, she rifled in her fourth goal of the season.

That temporary joy soon turned to frustration and anger, however, as the Pride defense gave up two unanswered goals. Late in the match, the Pride's Drew Smith cut in from the left flank and unleashed a terrific shot that bounced back off the crossbar. C.J. Allen was there to settle the rebound down and scored her first goal of the season for the final 4-2 score. The game was marred by a couple of yellow cards awarded to TSC's Lisa Zanti, who let her frustrations get the better of her.

After two games on the road, Millburn returned to New Jersey to host Adirondack at Millburn H.S. on June 10th, and after trailing 1-0 at half-time, the Magic fought back for an exciting 3-1 victory. The win reignited the New Jersey team's play-off hopes, while stunning conference co-leaders Lynx, who had entered the game with an impressive 3-0 record.

The Magic started out strong, but the Lynx would find their game culminating in Tessa McDougall's goal off an assist from Laura Burnett-Kurie in the 14th minute. Recognizing the need to take maximum points from the game, the Magic changed formation to 3-4-1-2 and picked up the tempo in the second half.

With Laura Kurash causing problems for the Adirondack team in an attacking midfield role, the away team had less space to play in and Millburn capitalized on this by pressing more quickly. The equalizer came in the 58th minute, as Kat Sheeleigh drifted inside after receiving the ball from Kim Malecki, and unleashed a curling 25-yard strike past Lynx keeper Meghan Sleezer to tie the game at 1-1.

Lifted by the goal, the Magic continued to press and in the 67th minute, went ahead via Kim Malecki as she re-directed the ball past the stranded Sleezer after Sheeleigh volleyed toward goal off a corner kick. Millburn tried to put the game beyond doubt, and did so in the 82nd minute courtesy of Katie Ryan.

A strong run from Tara Riccardi saw her shake off her opponent and penetrate the Lynx midfield before releasing Ryan. The Villanova forward showed great control to take the ball inside the defender, before driving the ball past Sleezer with her left foot. The goal secured the Magic's second win and the Lynx's first defeat of the 2009 campaign.

Magic Line-Up: Lia Fierro, Ashley Ventura, Lina Staropoli, Katelin Blaine, Leah Jerome, Tara Ricciardi, Kim Malecki, Katy Fissel, Laura Kurash, Kat Sheeleigh, Katie Ryan. Subs: Kelly Sims (30) Carly Bray (20), Biz Shenk (63), Kelly Feeney, Caitlin Walker.
