Long Island (above) guarantees participation in the Final Four they host: Miami clinches first National Championship berth
East FinalMILLBURN MAGIC 0, LONG ISLAND FURY 3GARDEN CITY, NY (07/25/09) - The Long Island Fury dominated possession of the ball against the surprising Millburn Magic in the 2009
Women's Premier Soccer League (WPSL) East Final, but entered half-time with nothing to show for it on the scoreboard. Yet, that would change with three goals in the second half to propel the Fury to a 3-0 win at Adelphi University's Competition Field, clinching the East Conference berth in the 2009 WPSL Final Four that they will host this upcoming weekend.
"Not a great performance tonight," commented Long Island Fury head coach Paul Riley, as his team remains undefeated at 12-0-1 while the Magic conclude their season at 7-5-1. "We did just enough to win and our star players did not have their best games. I think that playing three games in six nights have taken their toll... Alaina Beyar was by far the best player on the field tonight."
In the 47th minute, a Karin Simonian cross was dummied by Vicki DiMartino and landed at the feet of Alaina Beyar, who put the Fury on the board with a shot from six yards. Rosie Hayes than made it 2-0 in the 52nd minute with a 22-yard blast past the near post of Magic goalkeeper Lia Fierro (12 saves). Kelly Farrell closed out the scoring with a shot from eight yards in the 68th minute off an assist from Jasmyne Spencer.
The Fury defense recorded their fourth shutout in the past five games, although Magic forward Katie Ryan was dangerous until going down with a thigh injury in the 72nd minute. Long Island starting goalkeeper Jillian Mastroianni made three saves while substitute keeper Brittany Anghel had one save. Long Island enjoyed just a 4-3 corner kick advantage although the Fury took 25 shots to the Magic's 7 shots.
The Fury hosts the Women's Premier Soccer League Final Four at Adelphi University next Saturday, August 1 and Sunday, August 2. The Fury will play a national semifinal match next Saturday at 5 pm against an opponent to be determined from this weekend's playoff action.
Regional FinalOHIO PREMIER WOMEN'S S.C. 0, MIAMI KICKERS F.C. 2PLANTATION, FL (07/25/09) - The Miami Kickers F.C. - the South Florida franchise & Sunshine Conference champions of the Women's Premier Soccer League (WPSL) - defeated Midwest champion Ohio Premier Women's S.C. (8-1-1) by a 2-0 score on Saturday to claim the team's first-ever appearance in the WPSL National Championship. Miami (8-1-2) will now travel to Adelphi University in Garden City, NY for the 2009 Final Four hosted by the Long Island Fury, where they will face-off with a yet to be determined opponent in the National Semifinals this Saturday, August 1.
"I am extremely proud of the team and what they have been able to accomplish this season," said Marc Miceli, Miami Head Coach and General Manager. "The new talent this year from top notch college and high school players, combined with our seasoned players has truly worked very well for us."
Playing in her first match of the season, 2008 Sun Sentinel & Miami Herald Broward County Player Of The Year & East Carolina standout Chrissy Gratz scored both goals for the home side. With less than 10 minutes to play in the first half, Miami's star forward April Perry took a pass from Stephanie Quinones and drew a foul inside the box.
Gratz then stepped up and slipped the penalty kick just inside the right post for the eventual game-winning goal. In the second half, a pass from Elana Brady to Gratz would set up the insurance goal, clinching the match for the Kickers.
Kickers Goalkeeper Chrissy Hy had an outstanding game, making eight saves in one of her best efforts of the season. In the first half, Hy leaped high to knock a ball onto the crossbar, allowing the defense to clear the shot. In the second half, she controlled the action - sliding for saves, positioning herself well and racing to loose balls.
Assisting Hy on a strong Kickers defense was Deidre Bass, Rachel Bueno, Rochelle Willis and Sam Wright. Last week, Bass was moved to the sweeper position which has paid dividends. In a second half move, Perry was placed in defense by Miceli - utilizing her speed and skill to further enhance the team's defensive efforts.
