Ajax goalkeeper Brittany Cameron (above) may have got the shutout, but the offense put on the show
GARDEN CITY, NY (08/01/09) - When the term "upset" comes up in regards to the National Semifinals of the
Women's Premier Soccer League (WPSL) Championship history, there have been enough occurrences to make a person suspicious of any claimed advantage that one team may have over another. For example - the New England Mutiny over defending WPSL champion Utah Spiders in the 2004 Semifinals, while the next year, eventual title-holder F.C. Indiana would upset the Final Four host Mutiny and the California Storm on the way to the crown.
When it came to the 2008 defending champion Ajax America (15-1-1) and the Miami Kickers F.C. (8-2-2) in the first 2009 WPSL National Semifinal at Adelphi University's Competition Field, the Pacific Conference champions would put all notions of an "upset" away early in the 5-0 victory. Head Coach Brian Boswell would benefit from his contingent from the Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) regular season champion Los Angeles Sol, as
Lyndsey Patterson would net a pair of goals - including the eventual game-winner - while
Lisa Sari would notch a goal and an assist in the win.
Ajax is an official affiliate of the Sol, and Patterson would make the final verdict official just seven minutes into the match. The former University of Tennessee star would score from 12 yards out off a diagonal feed from
Sabrina Demonte. Demonte would tack on her second assist of the match in the 24th minute, as she fed Sari the ball who turned the Miami defender and put her shot past goalkeeper
Christine Hy (7 saves) for the 2-0 half-time lead.
The second half would see much of the same Ajax ball control, and in the 53rd minute, the Sol's
Julia Schnugg would break in one v. one on the beleaguered Hy from 30 yards out and tally the third goal of the match. Patterson would score her second goal in the 76th minute on a tight angle shot.
Just three minutes later,
Lisa Hermen would score from 25 yards out off a Sari assist to make the final 5-0 score line. Ajax would out-shoot Miami by a 20-2 margin and the combination of keepers
Brittany Cameron &
Tawny Poggio in goal would only have to make one save.
The defending WPSL champions will do just that tomorrow, Sunday, August 2nd at 2:30 p.m. in the 2009 National Final, as with their win they are in position for the repeat bid. Their opponent will be the winner of the second WPSL Semifinal, as the East Conference champion & host Long Island Fury (12-0-1) goes up against Big Sky champion Dallas Premier (10-0-1) at Competition Field.
