A team effort from the Long Island Fury sends them to the 2009 WPSL Championship match
GARDEN CITY, NY (08/01/09) - The Long Island Fury's undefeated season continues as they stopped another undefeated team, Dallas Premier, by a 3-0 score in the
Women's Premier Soccer League (WPSL) Semifinal tonight in front of an enthusiastic crowd at Adelphi University's Competition Field. All three Fury goals were scored in the first half and with the win, the Fury move on to the 2009 WPSL National Championship match to take on defending 2008 champion Ajax America on Sunday, August 2nd.
Molly Bruh of East Williston put the Fury on the board in the 28th minute when her tackle of a Dallas defensive clear eight yards from the goal wound up deflecting into the net. Four minutes later, Syosset's
Kari Quinn sent a floating 30-yard cross that
Kelly Henderson of Baldwin ran onto and kicked into the net from four yards.
Vicki DiMartino of Massapequa Park scored her 14th goal of the season when she stole the ball near the halfway line, dribbled past one defender and slotted the ball past Dallas keeper
Tina Rincon from 14 yards.
"I thought that we took our chances and Dallas did not," commented Long Island Fury head coach Paul Riley. "
Alyssa Pember and
Tara Mendoza were great on defense,
Madison Haller was great in midfield all night and I thought that Jaz (Jasmyne Spencer), Vicki (DiMartino) and Molly (Bruh) were terrific as well... We have a very tough game tomorrow for the national championship."
The statistics prove that this was an even match as the Fury took 11 shots to Dallas' eight and had three corner kicks while Dallas had five. Haller was named Offensive MVP while the Co-Defensive MVPs were Pember and Mendoza. Dallas goalkeeper Rincon had two saves while Fury keeper
Jillian Mastroianni made three saves. The Fury has shut out five of their last six opponents.
