WPSL WEEKEND PREVIEW

Elise Weber & the Chicago Red Stars can solidify their post-season hopes in the WPSL Midwest Conference this weekend

SACRAMENTO, CA (07/01/11) - In the spirit of the holiday weekend, there will be plenty of "friendly" action in the Women's Premier Soccer League (WPSL) but there will still be a full share of spirited competition with over 25 matches kicking off this weekend. The coverage of the Women's World Cup in Germany still gives soccer fans plenty of opportunities to see some of the future stars in the game of women's soccer.

While the Pacific Conference will see the North Division teams travel south for a series of friendlies versus South Division competition, the Midwest, Sunshine and Big Sky Conferences will see important match-ups that will determine playoff positions. With two wins this weekend, the Chicago Red Stars (4-1-0 Mid-North) can clinch a spot in the 4-team Midwest playoffs after their 4-2 victory over defending conference champions F.C. Milwaukee (4-2-1 Mid-North), and will essentially play both matches at "home."

On Saturday, the Red Stars will host the first of two matches open to the public at the Village of Lisle-Benedictine University Sports Complex, 5700 College Road, in west suburban Lisle, IL. Chicago will take on the Iowa Rush (2-4-2 Mid-North) at 5:15 PM tomorrow afternoon and will host the Minnesota Kings F.C. (2-4-2 Mid-North) at 6:00 PM on Sunday, July 10th.

Tickets are $10 for general admission seating, and $15 for the July 2 doubleheader that includes a match between Chicago-based Eclipse Select (1-1-2 Mid-North) and Minnesota Kings F.C., followed by the Red Stars/Iowa Rush. For more information, visit www.ChicagoRedStars.com and click on the Tickets menu. This Sunday, Chicago will take on Eclipse Select in a potential play-off clincher for the Red Stars.

There are four teams still in contention for the Sunshine Conference title, and with two wins this weekend, the Gulf Coast Texans (5-2-1 Sunshine) can put themselves in prime position with two games remaining. Out of the all the teams in the conference, Brandon F.C. (3-2-0 Sunshine) have the most games in hand, and technically-speaking, if they win out they can capture the title and face the Midwest champion for the WPSL National Championship berth.

In the Big Sky-South Division, defending conference champions Oklahoma Alliance F.C. (8-1-0 Big Sky-South) have only one opponent left who can challenge their claim to this season's division title - F.C. Dallas (3-1-0 Big Sky-South). With two home matches this weekend on Dr. Pink Field at Pizza Hut Park and another two postponed matches to re-schedule, they are the only team that can catch up with OAFC. The division title could come down to the matchup at Dr. Pink Field on Sunday, July 17th between the two sides.
