FC Sacramento Ties Seattle Synergy
FC Sacramento Pride and the visiting Seattle Synergy played to a 0-0 tie in an entertaining Women's Premier Soccer League (WPSL) match at Promontory Park in El Dorado Hills Sunday afternoon.
FC Sacramento hoped that the warmth radiating from the artificial turf and the oversized dimensions of the Promontory field would take a toll on their visitors from the north. The Pride spread the field and used crisp passing and active play from center midfielders Rocio Ruiz and Taylor Chamberlain to create mismatches in the Synergy backfield. The strategy worked as the Pride tallied 14 shots on goal. However, as has been the case in recent games, FC Sacramento failed to capitalize. Regina McGee had two breakaways that nearly crossed the goal, only to be turned away by heads up plays by Seattle's defender Lillian Bourret and goal keeper Kamryn Morgan.
Sensing their opponent's fatigue, FC Sacramento pressed the action in the second half. Sweeper Kelly Melanson controlled the back line for the Pride. Sydney Douglas made several long runs from the backfield and put the ball in the offensive mix with long crossing passes. However, when the Pride failed to convert, Seattle put on a push of its own making four good tries at the very end of the match. Goal keeper Sarah Peters was able to turn away these shots and the game ended tied at zero.
FC Sacramento travels next week to Seattle for a rematch with the Synergy. The Pride will return to Promontory Park July 11 for a match against the Portland Rain FC.
