SEALIONS CLINCH SECOND PLACE

SAN DIEGO – Heidi Garrett scored twice, once in each half, and Tessa Lennala added her team-best 6th goal of the season to lead San Diego WFC to a convincing 4-1 win over the Claremont Stars on Sunday.  Garrett and Lennala, both of UC-Riverside, have combined for 10 of the SeaLions' 43 goals this year.

"We played up to our potential today," said SeaLions head coach Sean Bowers.  "Our pace was quick and our passing was precise, and that created a lot of opportunities the forwards were able to capitalize upon."

The win avenges a 2-1 season-opening loss in Claremont and clinches second-place for the SeaLions in the WPSL-West, which some people are calling the toughest division in Women's soccer.  San Diego is second in the WPSL in scoring with 43 goals, while allowing just 13.

Lizzy Coghill (Notre Dame) iced the match for the SeaLions in the 75th minute with her fourth score of the season.  Goalkeeper Lu Snyder's (SDSU) bid for a 6th shutout was thwarted in the 85th minute when the Stars' Rosa Tantillo (USC) poked-in a goal from 4 yards out, after the San Diego defense failed to clear a loose ball resulting from a point-blank save by Snyder.  Tantillo is the sister of SeaLion Maddie Tantillo (PLNU).

The SeaLions (9-3-1, 28 points) finish their 2007 schedule on the road in Sonoma next weekend (7/22), and a victory over the 4th-place Sol would give San Diego its second consecutive 10-win season, following last year's 11-1-1 campaign and WPSL Final Four appearance.
