SAN DIEGO, CA – June 1, 2009 – The San Diego SeaLions (Women's Premier Soccer League) defeated the Claremont Stars and the LA Rampage in back-to-back games on Saturday and Sunday.
With these two victories, the SeaLions earned their third straight win, and a spot at the top of the Pacific South Division standings with a 3-0-0 record (9 points).
The SeaLions returned from the road Saturday night with a 1-0 win over the Claremont Stars. The first real chance in the game came in the 10th minute with a long ball to lone forward, Tessa Lennala who had a breakaway and sent the ball directly into the waiting gloves of Claremont keeper, Alyssa Clark.
A foul on Lennala in the 34th minute resulted in a SeaLion penalty kick from 40 yards out shot just wide by midfielder, Giuliana Longmire. The game remained tied at zeros until the 89th minute when midfielder, Danica Carey, scored the game-winning goal off a cross from Hallie Huston.
Back home at Cathedral Catholic last night, the SeaLions took some time before kick-off to honor former Women's National Team member and Olympic Gold Medalist, Shannon MacMillan. An autographed MacMillan jersey was raffled off to one lucky eight-year-old fan.
With the game tied at zeros nearing the end of the first half, forward, Tessa Lennala was pulled to the ground, resulting in a red card ejection for Rampage defender, Rebekah Fergusson. Neither team capitalized on any of their chances for the remainder of the game until the second minute of stoppage time when SeaLion midfielder, Giuliana Longmire sent in a lofted ball which just sailed in over the head of the Rampage goalkeeper giving the SeaLions the 1-0 win.
The SeaLions host PSSCV Santa Clarita this Saturday, June 6 at 7:30 pm at Cathedral Catholic High School. The first 400 fans will receive a free SeaLions sweat wrist band. For more information or to purchase tickets, please visit www.SeaLionSoccer.com.
